Just picked up a 2006 2.0TQM... first mod?

I just picked up a 2006 Black on Black 2.0T Quattro M6 and its bone stock. I have a lot of ideas of what I want to do to the car, but I don't know where to start. What should I do as my first mod or - if its a legitimate question - what needs to be modded first?

I'd like to address some of the weaknesses of the original set-up before doing any radical performance gains. Power is useless if you can't control it. Are any weak links in the system before I start adding power?

If you have atleast the sport suspension, then the only weakness is the power. You will love the chip and APR has specials right now

Re: Just picked up a 2006 2.0TQM... first mod?

sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm in the same boat as Joshd2012, and have the same intentions as well.

Before any power mods, shouldn't we replace things that can break when we make more power like a FORGE DV to replace the crappy stock one?

Also, if you buy a chip first, you will be making more power for sure, but if you plan to purchase a turbo-back exhaust and CAI (which also fall into the category of basic mods) in the future, you will need to get the chip reprogrammed, no? To my knowledge a chip reprograms the fuel, ignition, and boost among other things and some if not all of these things would be improved with the addition of a better DV, turbo-back exhaust, and CAI. Therefore, i would think your chip would need to be completely recalibrated upon the addition of these mods...Forgive me if I am wrong in any of my assumptions.

So maybe your first mods should be the ones I mentioned. If you have no further plans to mod your car in the near future, I would imagine the chip would be perfectly fine...

Re: Just picked up a 2006 2.0TQM... first mod?

I would also like to know how the chips give additional power. If they are simply retarding the knock sensor, then I will probably wait until I can build some reliability into the engine. Or is there some deeper programing going on to find the additional power.

I have also heard about the DV... is this something I should replace first?

quattrosaint: no sport suspension (used manuals are hard enough to find around here, let alone a black/black). I do plan on doing coilovers, just don't know when. So much to do, ya know?

Coilover run $1000 and up, I would recomend them on a non sport suspension b/c the shocks would need to be replaced as well. From what I am told Stasis has a kick ass system for $1000. I am going the route of H&R springs with RS4 way bars. Yes there is a weak point in the DV. I chipped my car with 2000 miles and now have 7000, all is well with it but I ordered a forged DV to put in since the car will be in the shop for a week or 2 for suspension upgrades while I'm on vacation. I would not replace it until it breaks, it will its just a matter of when. The question of mods with a chip, I have a stock exhaust with a k&n filter and everything works great. I know with APR you can have it reflased for free when you increase your mods and can even get a stage 2 software when you put on a new exhaust. Hope this helps.

Re: Just picked up a 2006 2.0TQM... first mod?

The chips in new cars, for the most part, all auto-adjust to different fuels and minimalist mods. Usually the chips change the air/fuel mixture to increase power and they will also adjust automatically to minimalist mods. If you are going with a different turbo then you will need the chip retuned but that is about the only reason to retune. You guys should really spend some time searching this site and doing a little research. You will definitely be glad you did.

Re: Just picked up a 2006 2.0TQM... first mod?

I just saw the holiday sale. I had no idea it was starting this soon. I thought it wasn't for another month or so. I had my car chipped about a week and half ago, so I'm a little upset. I called APR and the gentleman I spoke with seemed to understand my plight. Anyway, they are going to give me a call when the sales manager gets back and let me know what they are going to do for me.

I would say either chip it, or do some wheels. I think when you ad the CAI the chip should/will adjust automatically. It's when you add the exhaust is when you need to get the APR Stage II flash.

The C/O's would probably end up costing the same as, if not more than a chip with the CAI and DV, due to the fact that it will cost a good amount to install them. It's up to you though. Happy modding!

Get your car chipped and dont worry about the other stuff failing until it does. There are plenty of people who are going strong past 30k miles with no problems. If your DV does fail, its not something that keeps you off the road, its just power loss.

Almost all shops will reflash your chipped car to adjust for your new mods free of charge.
