    Problems Refueling

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 99.5 is having problems refueling. I can pump like 75 cents worth of gas then it stops filling. I have to pull the nozzle out and relieve pressure. I hear air coming out and alot of the times fuels comes out with it. Does anyone have idea what the problem is?

are you sure its the car or the pump. because there is a little pressure valve insind the pump handle that determines when to stop flowing fuel to the tank.

sounds like the filler may have a blockage in it thats letting the incoming fuel back up and trip the pump. fumes alone wont do it.

    Re: Problems Refueling

Any update on this, I know it's kind of an old thread. My A4 was just at the dealership for a week with this problem. They put a whole new fuel tank and refill tube in, and said it's good to go. I then go to my chevron station down the street and it's doing this same thing. I'm so frustrated right now. I think I may try to switch to a shell station and see if it's the pumps themselves.

I've had the same problem, but if I pull the nozzle out a little, it works fine.

    Re: Problems Refueling

you check that little plastic piece inside the hole? theres a little plastic piece that the nossel would push up against so while you fill with liquid gasoline the top part of the tanks hose will pull up the fumes from your tank and put it back to the gas stations tanks to turn back into liquid.

    Re: Problems Refueling

Mine did the same thing and the dealer replaced the tank under warranty. Still did it and I then mentioned the charcoal filter and sure enough that was it. Took them a month to fix it, drove a B6 1.8 on their dime and man is that thing slow without a chip.

    Re: Problems Refueling

When people overfill their tank, liquid gasoline drains into the charcoal filter. When the filter fills up, the tank can no longer vent. The vent hose goes to the intake manifold where the vapors are supposed to be burned when the car is running.
If you have a charcoal filter full of liquid, it may take a few weeks to clear out all of the gasoline.

Yes, station pumps do break. But another nozzle at the same station should work just fine.

    Re: Problems Refueling

How long do you think it would take the dealer to do the charcoal filter. It was just there a week getting the whole tank replaced, and I had to drive a Jetta around. Boy, was that great, (sarcasm). I may call them up and mention it to them and see what they say. If I could get the filter how hard is this to replace on my own.

    Re: Problems Refueling

Unless the filter cannister itself is broken, there is no need to replace it. While you drive the car, the fumes will be drawn into the intake manifold and burn. Just don't get the gas tank full of gasoline for a while.

Well I'd like to replace it if it'll fix the problem I'm having when I refuel.

    Re: Problems Refueling

Replacement is several hundred dollars. Driving without boost for several hours is much more fun.
You could get under the car and unplug the cannister and dump out the excess fuel...
