Pacino and Deniro both were in so many great flicks, and then again both of them took so many crappy roles later in their careers.

I'm guessing as they get older, they realize they just take what they can get. I'm sure they still have pull in the business, but they realize they can grab nice paychecks and not be too picky.

Pacino's Best: Scarface, Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, Heat.

Deniro's Best: Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Cape Fear, A Bronx Tale, Goodfellas, Casino.

I think Deniro definitely has the edge as far as the quantity of quality movies. Although Scarface alone is unbeatable.

They both have a lot of similar roles/themes. They're also both from NYC, which can usually be seen in the characters they play.

I know you guys will think I'm crazy, but I was not a fan of the Godfather Trilogy. Of course the first was a major classic, but the rest of them ruined it for me.

And I'm a huge fan of mafia movies.

I saw collateral last night and it was pretty good. It's tough to say that it was incredible, because I went in expecting so much.

I think Heat is by far my all time favorite action movie. The bank shootout has to be one of the most intense, realistic, and entertaining scenes I've ever watched.

One thing I've noticed is how much attention Mann pays to sound effects. Remember in that bank shootout the way you can hear the echoes of Kilmer's M4 down the street... well collateral has really good handgun sound effects. Cruise is packing what I think is a HK .45, and when he offs people it is sounds incredible. Everybody Cruise kills gets two rounds in the chest + one in the forehead... I never though Cruise could play such a hard (as in stone-cold-killer hard) role.

that whole gun sequence after the bank heist was booming my 5.1 dolby....it was nuts and extremely realistic....

Heat is an awesome movie. No need to discuss
Both, Pacino and De Niro, are two of the best actors in the world.
I love their movies. But after Heat there came no movies that can beat it.
De Niro is even able to act in funny movies. I like Pacino as a tough guy like Tony in Scarface or like Carlito. But I count Frankie and Johnny to one of his funny movies. And I love that one !

The reason the sound effects are so loud (aka realistic) is that Michael Mann insists we use full loads for the guns.. Which means what you hear is exactly real. Only the slugs were removed from the bullets, so everyone on set wears earplugs. It's funny seeing passer-bys get all freaked out when they hear the automatic fire in the middle of Hollywood Blvd.

doesnt he have trouble getting a decent recording of gunshots though? i would think some of them would clip or something.

I haven't been in the editing room for his projects (this was back when I was on the production side of things, as opposed to now, where I am in post), but one of his goals for Heat was to capture as much real sounds as possible and have as little audio manipulation as possible. That includes the echos of the gunfire that were present in the bank shootout. Usually this is undesirable, but in this case a welcome addition to the realism.

I also didn't get a chance to see the sound dept's equipment, but I remember that the boom mike wasn't placed near the scene for his other projects. Most audio was taken from a distance to avoid spikes.

thats some good work then, most of the time movies just use effects, or they re record sound.. forgot the technical name for it, its been too long since i took my audio classes.
