    Clunking Noise -- After Maintenance

Well I took the week off to take care of some maintenance. I changed my tranny fluid and filter, front, center and rear differential oil and replaced seal in the rear differential and one in the driveshaft, I also changed my brakes and pads, I went with Powerdics in the front and oem in the rear with PBR ceramic pads.

I had the car whole car up on jack stands for about five days. Now that I'm done I've been hearing some clunking noise when hitting small bumps in the road or manhole covers it's hard to tell if the noise is coming from the front or rear, but I fell it in the center. So I'm wondering if it could be the driveshaft or maybe the controll arms are now bad from being on stands for five days.

Also for anyone who's done brakes. How close are the pads supposed to be to the rotors because it sure looks like mine are touching.

Anyone have any ideas what the sounds could be it's really pissing me off, seeing as I spent all week working on the car.

Make sure your rattle clips are on the brakes good. I have the same problem with my passenger side fron brake, I need a new clip....

Where did you place the jack stands? I don't think that you would have harmed a control arm just by have the car on jack stands. If anything, it should have taken stress off of them.

Is the clunking associated with when you're braking? If so, then maybe it's a caliper issue.

Although clunking noises are usually signs of a control arm issue. Perhaps it was coincidence. How many miles do you have on the car, and when was the last time you changed the control arms?

Oh yeah, and the pads will always be very close to the rotors, that should be normal. As long as you don't hear them rubbing or feel it, you should be fine.

The car is a 1997 and the controll arm's have never been replaced, only the tie rods, the jack stands where placed in the pinch welds. I was thinking control arms but just doesn't seem normal that I'm now just hearing the sound after doing some maintenance. It' hard to tell where the sound is coming from but I'm sure it's clunking, almost feels as if the car needs new shocks, but mine only a year old (Koni's).

If you're never changed the control arms, then I would say that's likely it. I'm sure if you keep driving it, sooner or later you'll have a better idea on where it's coming from.

You can also try rocking the car up and down on each corner to see if you can recreate the noise.

Just wondering if you ever replaced your control arms. I know ECS Tuning has a kit for the fronts but what about the rears I've never seen a kit for those, but like I said I can't tell if it's coming from the front or rear.

I'm pretty sure ECS's kit is the complete kit for all the control arms.

Here's a great thread on the job:
