The Team Cadillac duo of Max Angelelli and Ron Fellows paced practice Friday in preparation for this weekend’s SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship doubleheader, part of the Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport at Mosport International Raceway. Michael Culver’s Porsche was third.
Driving the No. 16 Cadillac/Mobil 1/Motorola/Bose Cadillac CTS-V, Angelelli turned a fastest lap of 1:23.850 (105.574 mph) around the 2.459-mile, 10-turn circuit in the morning session. The lap was faster than the existing qualifying record of 1:24.928 (104.234 mph), set by Bill Auberlen, driving a BMW M3, in 2003.
“Today’s practice allowed us to finish our setup work for qualifying and tomorrow’s race,” Angelelli, of Monaco, said. “I am very happy with my car and anticipate a good qualifying tomorrow and even a better race.”
Local hero Fellows, making his first SCCA SPEED GT appearance and the first with Team Cadillac, turned a lap of 1:23.934 (105.468 mph) to lead the afternoon session, just 0.084-second off the pace of his teammate’s earlier time.
Making his first appearance in three races, Culver, originally from Ontario and now residing in Wesport, Conn., ran his fast lap of 1:24.363 (104.932 mph) in the first session driving the No. 14 First Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
Lou Gigliotti, of Dallas, drove his No. 28 LG Pro Long Tube Header Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 to the fourth fastest time, followed by the Banner Engineering Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 of Leighton Reese.
Qualifying for Saturday’s first half of the doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m. (EDT), with the race making its standing start at 4:00 p.m. (EDT).
