For Those Who Have Used Plasti Dip On Their Grills ...

Not that this has anything to do with the grills but I think it may work. I made a dual gauge fiberglass pod for on top of the steering column but I cant get the finish perfect like I like it. Those who have used that plastidip paint on grills, does it at all build up or cover up and markings (stone nicks) that are on the grill pieces you painted??

Heres how it is now, I sanded all the paint off and coated the whole thing with body filler again so I can sand it and get out a few more spots (Wish this stuff would dry faster )

it covers them a bit, but not as much as you have. ur gonna have to sand it down pretty smooth.

when i did my grill, it had little rock chips in it. the plasti dip covered them decently, but it was still noticeable. i went back and used a toothpick to blot them in as best as i could. then i sprayed the next coat on a few hours later.

it's not perfect, but that part of the grill was hidden, so no worries on my part.

i can almost guarantee you that the picture above will not be smoothed out by plasti dip. i believe it will be quite noticeable. however, if you can sand it down so the ridges are less then a mm difference, then i think it may work.

problem is, this is an interior part. the grill i did had imperfections, but it was hidden by the middle piece as well as it faced the back or corner of the hood, so it's not visible. and interior piece like this is much easier to notice imperfections.

i think if you just sand it down really smooth, it will come out fine. i loved the finish that comes with plasti dip, so it would definitely look good in a black interior. i can try to get you a close-up if you want of my grill.

If you would have read my post I said I just coated it with body filler again so I can sand it again and try to get rid of a few of the imperfections. My question is how much does the plastidip build up? Theres no way in hell I would expect anything to cover up the volcano's that are on it in the pic above

It's not gonna build up and cover imperfections enough to make you happy. Once it's sanded, spray it with building primer and resand it a couple times, that should fill in all the small imperfections enough to look good when you paint it with the PlastiDip.

you have to make sure that the body filler that you are using is skim coat and not bondo,because bondo is verry pooris and will have allot of pin holes in it after it is sanded that is why they make skim coat to go over the bondo. the skim coat will fill in all the miner imperfections. you wont need bondo so once you have applied and sanded the skim coat prime it sand it then paint it oh yeah get a plastic body filler spreader cause it looks like you finger painted that filler on

once ur sand it down smooth, i think it will work out fine once it's smooth. sorry for coming out sounding like a dick, but i assumed you hadnt used plasti dip before. guess i made a bad assumption. i hope the rest of the replay may have helped though.

This is good shit that I use, I use it with all my fiberglass stereo installs, its about 40 bucks a gallon so its definitely not your basic bondo, its gets as smooth as can be but when you combine it with MDF and something small like Im dealing you cant always get it perfect like a larger slightly sweeping surface. And I have every spreader under the sun but its easier to work the stuff into the little holes with your finger

Im going to give it a try, we'll see how it turns out!

It looks bigger in the pics that it is in person but making it out of MDF/glass its as small as possible, its already a little more flimsy than I was wanting hence the reason its hard to keep all the seems tight and thats whats causing my problems. The more I sand on it the more flexible it gets and causes more imperfections. I wish there was a double gauge Podi, that would be killer. Hell a double gauge anything would work for me I guess no one else pays attention to what there motor is doing ...

If I had a spare pillar I would, I dont feel like taking that thing out just to make a form of it. Looks like a pain to take out. I dont quite know how I would form something to it or how it would turn out (still going to be big the way Im making it) and it would be 3x the pita that this thing has already been. Im hoping someone eventually makes a mold formed plastic pod then I wont have to worry about it

Also to add, as I said its a little big but you can see the most important two things right in front of you, I can see the tach up to 7k and the speed from 20 around so everything thats important is more than visible. The pod I have will work for now, I just need to get it painted and not have it come out like shit!

I want both side by side, I would have left my Eboost where it was if that were the case I talked to Adam about this a few months ago and they can make one for both gauges and the different sizes but for about 350 bucks shipped and about 8 weeks time. No way in hell I want to be without that pillar piece for 2 months AND pay that much money!

you dont need the pvc... you can get a very flush tight fit to the pod following what i wrote up here.

it is a much better product/quality than my first one..

I looked through it but I missed that part, good idea btw I really dislike having the gauges on the pillar, the best place in my mind is right where they are. Your fiberglass ring idea though has got me thinking if I might want to redo the column pod now like that and make it a bit smaller. Damn Ive already spent almost 2 days working on this one, I hate throwing stuff away and having to start over

Just thought of something else, the Innovate Wideband gauge does not have any depth to it, its about 1/2" thick and has no way to mount it in a "tube" like design like on A4mods. Any other ideas as to what to do with this thing?

Heres my new center section with my computer switches and keyboard. Gauge pod is drying as we speak and looks GREAT with about 5 coats of Plasti Dip now, stuff builds up very nicely!

I know but Im stumped on what else to do, need a damn PODI!! With the wideband gauge unless it has something to cam against with the mount your not going to fix it anywhere. Its gotta have the cross piece behind it grab on something meaning inside a guage pod. With the fiberglass tube your using the snug fit to keep it there. I know it F'in sucks but I dont know what else to do and Im sick of fucking with the damn thing to be honest. I hate half assing stuff but I dont know what else to do at the moment. When I think of something I can assure you I will do it!!!!

^ Wow, I personally think you did a great job.

I love the center section, looks MUCH better than the original design (IMO), and the steering column gauges are slightly bigger than I'd like, but props for doing it, came out very nice looking.

Here ya go The design really isnt that bad, my only problem with it is the finish on the face isnt perfect, its the best I could get it for the materials and how I made it, and it could be about 1/4" smaller but again thats how I made the radius so it couldnt be any smaller made this way
