    Grinding/Rattling sound

My car makes a weird grinding/rattling sound. It's sound kind of like sticking a playing card in a fan or bycicle wheel. It happens in every gear at really low rpms(around 1200-1600) and only lasts for a split second. It also happens during start-up and sometimes happens during idle. My car is a 1.8TQ, stock chip.

    Check your timing belt.

What should I be looking for. Is it common for the timing belt to be causing these sounds.

It could be a lot things. Rattles/Vibrations can come from pretty much anything, like a loose heat shield. Other rattles often come from the cat, either it's going, or has a crack in it, etc... It could also be the throwout bearing.

There's just too many possibilities. You'd need to be much more specific as to where the sound is exactly coming from.

I had a strange clicking noise coming from my belts right after I bought my car. It was a rythymic ticking sound from the belts/pulleys area.

When I replaced my timing belt, I found that the waterpump belt was the culprit. It was very dry-rotted and would make a squeaking noise as it rolled over the pulleys. The squeak was so quick and low-pitched that it sounded like a click.

The A/C belt can also become stretched out and make a dragging sound when the belt is cold.

i wish i could find out where the noise is coming from but it only happens when i hit boost so i cant exactly get out and listen, y buddie was in the car with me and he was telling me that his clutch makes a noise like that sometimes so maybe its the hrowout bearing
