Replacing valve cover gasket-what else should I do?

This sunday I am replacing the valve cover gasket and fuel filter. What else would be a good thing to replace while I'm in those areas?

Why are you replacing the gasket, an oil leak? Chances are high that its not the gasket and is the cam tensioner seal. This is a much more involved job (cam removal is required). If you get it replaced, there are also some other seals on the cam that should get done. Take it to a mechanic and see if he can tell you where it is leaking. Valve cover gaskets arent cheap, and cant be reused, so it would suck if it didnt solve your problem.

I did my fuel filter. Not too bad, and it was badly needed.

    There's a great write-up on AW.
"Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Gasket cost me 33 bills. I'd say that is pretty cheap for being a genuine Audi part.

I didn't even think about the cam seals. I guess I'll have a look Sunday when I do the VC gasket. It never hurts to replace stuff, so I may as well do it.

As far as the fuel filter. I have all the tools I'll ever need, plus a choice of 5 different types of lifts so I should have a problem...at least they aren't in the tank. :)

Valve cover gaskets are very cheap and very easy to change. Did you mix up your gaskets ?

The writeup on AW for the Fuel Filter is good. You will need the 12 pt. Tq key (if that's what it called). Also ensure you charge the system(Key ON) and check for leaks three times(ON/OFF) for about 5 seconds each time before actually cranking.

When I took my car in for its last oil change, I was given back an estimate saying that my valve cover gaskets, camshaft tensioner and camshaft tensioner seals would all have to be replaced. It actually turned out to be the upper and lower oil pan seals. (I know, what the heck is an upper oil pan seal?) If you are having a leak, this might be another area to check out.
