    rubbing compound trouble

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
ok i recently debagged my car, the left side came out great however the right side had some minor scratches when i took off the badges, so i used a little bit of rubbing compound, after i did that i used so wax on a rag to buff the area, however now there is a slight dull look in that small area from the rubbing compound, my car is black and that small area looks somewhat grey, like is someone took there sweaty fingers and made a smudge on the car???

    anyway to fix it???? claybar???

    thanks

Does it still feel smooth to the touch? If so you might want to try a glaze and then a wax again. If it feels rough then you may have rubbed through the clearcoat. How much compound did you use - and for how long?

Basically you scratched your paint with the compound. You now need to go over it with some polish to get the scratches out.

A solutuion from Pepboys. It's made by Turtle Wax I think. It comes and black with what looks like lipstick. The stick is for scratches. The bottled wax restores color. I used it on a black GTI at work. Give it a shot.

I Would try clay bar. It works wonders
I debadged my Avant this past weekend and since the badges have been on there since 99 there was some nasty dirt and buildup and it took it right off, just make sure to wax or polish the area after clay baring it.

Don't bother with the claybar. It won't do anything for scratches.
Don't waste your time with glaze either it will make it look better temporary basis by filling in the scratches but won't fix the problem.

Here's what you did you put very light scratches in your paint by using compound. Don't worry though it's not permanent. You just need to use a polish to buff the scratches out. Use a soft cloth too or you will just scratch it and make it worse.

I do know what I'm talking about I used to be a professional detailer. Just be careful black can be a real pain to work on if you don't know what your doing.

He's right. I didn't know how bad your scratches were. Good luck anyways.

yeah claybar is great for deposits on the paint, but does nothing for scratches. I use Meguiars #7 Show Glaze. Works very well, but like BurntAudi says, a polish, which is a slightly heavier cut thant glaze will work better for the scratches you are dealing with.

ok time for my opinion..professional body worker. get yourself some foam polishing compund and a electric buffer and foam pad and buff the area with the compund and that will restore the are to its brillant shine..however you might find yourself doing the entire car later one

I thought of that too...but he could do more damage than good if he's never used electric buffer.

If it was my car that's exactly what I would do...but a buffer in the wrong hands can do a lot of damage.
