Sit down in an S5. First Thoughts.

I got a rare opportunity the other day to actually sit down in an S5. I wrote a couple of things about this in another thread but heres some other stuff I failed to mention. Hopefully I can shed light on some stuff that car reviews have yet to be stated.

    At First Glimpse

When I opened the door to where the S5 was sitting I was blown away. Ive seen it in pictures time and time again, but they do not do it justice. External fit and finish is excellent (as expected), styling is superb, and stance of the vehicle from far away is...incredible.

    Entry

To get into the S5 you have to have the Keyfob near the car, simple enough. But I guess in case your battery is dead for some reason and you need a key, that is available in the keyfob, you just pull out the metal part and youll see a regular key come out. You pull on the handle and the first thing you notice is that the glass on the door is free on the top. In other words there are no seals around the top of the glass. So when you open the door in an instant the glass pulls down to unseal itself from the car; similarly when you close the door the glass pops back up to make a good seal.

Come around to the back of the car where the trunk is and youll be surprised to find a completely different trunk mechanism then what youre used to. Its very simple and very untechnical and very un-Audi like. Its just two circular like bars that come from the top part of the trunk and loop to the back of the trunk lid. These are metal with plastic coverings. I thought it looked cheap. Youll also find two latches inside the trunk to fold down the rear passenger seats. Open the left hand side compartment and youll find the place to load the Nav DVD (good idea) as well as all the electronics for the audio system. Open up the bottom compartment for that full size spare and youll be dissapointed in finding ad non-full size spare.

    Sit down
When you first sit down in this car take a moment to think about how the seat feels. Remember it. Because you'll be craving it when you get back in your car. Each seat feels like it was personally sculpted to your body; you just melt into the leather. Speaking of leather, its fantastic. The particular color of leather in this model was the cinnamon it looked GREAT matched with the aluminum trim and wood inlays. Next, look at the speedo and the MMI screen. Youll notice how the depth of the gauges and screen are inset back seems to disappear. Everything is perfectly placed to the millimeter.

I thought I would hate the new center console. Actually, I LOVE the new center console. Right amount of buttons, right amount of subtle curvature to complement the rest of the car. Car has an electronic parking brake button there too, so for all of you who were wondering where the E-brake is, its that button that says (P) on the left hand side. Manual gearbox has a nice mechanical feel when shifting with a short throw shifter (Sorry didnt get to test drive, so I cant tell you how it feels when driving). Steering wheel and leather on the shifter were stiched in matching fibers as found in the leather seating. Nice touch.

To your right you'll find a storage compartment for a cellphone and other stuff Wrapped in the same leather that goes on the seats. Lift this up and youll be relieved to find it doesnt feel like it came from a VW like the center arm rest in the A4s. It has weight. It doesnt sound all plasticy. I like that.

Although car magazines said theres plenty of room in the back seats I began wondering what midgets they used to test this. Im not a very tall person, 5' 10" at best. I dont sit incredibly far back. But I looked in the back seat behind the passenger seat and it looked like there was less than my B7 A4. Now that I think about this the driver seat may have been pushed forward more then the passenger seat. I dont know, but I was dissappointed.

    Closing
Theres not really much else to say without having a drive--the dealership didnt actually own the car as it was on loan from AoA for an event tonight. However, I do have this to say. When you get out of the S5/A5 and close the door, take the time to listen to the sound the door makes when it closes. Much like the rest of the car, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Nice write up, can you comment a bit more about the rear seat room? That is a real concern for me when ordering this car.

Sure. I got to sit in the car again last night at the R8 Launch event in Sacramento. I moved the seat forward to about where I would sit and behind me was about the same amount of leg roof as my B7 A4. There were some people I saw sitting in the back seat so although it looked like there was none, I think it all depends on how far forward you put your seat.

Did anyone start the car? There are reports from Road and Track that the exhaust is louder on US-Spec cars vs. European-spec. Hope it's definitely audible inside.

When they were introducing the cars at the event I was at last night, while talking about the car the guy driving it kept revving it just slightly. And even at 1,500rpm it sounds soooo sexy. Dare I say it maybe sounds better than the RS4....

Awesome, sounds great! I wish I could go see the car but i'm in school in SoFlorida and cant find a dealer with one! Out of curiosity how tall are you? I'm about 5'9" and sit relatively far forward for someone my height, will their be a problem getting my 5'4" girlfriend in the back with a bunch of friends in the car?

Re: Sit down in an S5. First Thoughts.

after sitting in the s5, and having such high expectations from pictures and such, i was very disappointed.

i think it's a pretty significant downgrade from the b6/b7 interior in terms of ergonomics and also overall quality.

the interior definitely looks "fresh" though.

the exterior, especially the front and profile are awesome. rear is eh, looks like the new jettas with different tails.

the tt has more rear seat room than the s5...it's a joke.

Wow couldn't disagree with you more here. I own a B7 and after sitting in the S5 my car felt cheap--and its only been a week since my last payment.

Good to add but you do know that the bottom seat compartments in our 07s are sunglass holders right? Where is it located on the S5 and what's under the seat?

I know about the bottom compartment, but im almost positive its not for sunglasses unless you wear those huge Virtual Reality glasses that old people wear. There are no bottom compartments under the seats in the S5. Besides I dont know really what else to store in those.

See the compartment in front of the two dome lamps and behind the rear view mirror. You press that in and it slides down.

That's what i thought..... theres no way someone can fit in those rear seats given someone is already sitting in the driver's and passenger's seat.

Re: Sit down in an S5. First Thoughts.

I agree that a more sportier steering wheel would complete the interior. I'm thinking that the TT steering wheel would work well with the integrated controls. The airbag portion could be tricky though. Maybe some of the US RS4 owners would have information on what airbag to use. If I remember correctly they were using A8 airbags with the Euro RS4 steering wheel.

    LOVE! those seats. YES!
Audi, PLEASE give the B8 A4 these seats as optional "sport" seats and/or include them in the S-line package.
A sport sedan should have a sport seat option.

BTW, I read that the sunroof only pops up but does not actually open/slide.
That sucks. My 2000 Mits Eclipse had a great solution for a sunroof in a low cieling sport coupe, let the roof slide over the top of the cabin sheetmetal towards the back. It looks great and even better it works great. That style of sunroof is pretty quiet.

Can any of you that have sat in the A5/S5 comment on head room?
I am 6-1" but my torso is of someone around 6-4" as I have short legs, so headroom is very important for me.
Also, I sit upright in my cars with the back almost vertical. How would you guess the headroom would be for me?

The B8 A4 does get these seats based on the frankfurt auto show pictures. You should fit just fine. After all its a german car and not a japanese car.

The thing with the sunroof. You know, I never did like the sunroof over the sheet metal, gave it a cheap look. But thats just my opinion. I thought id hate it not opening up all the way, but once you sit in, its pretty easy to live with.

I hope you are correct about the B8 A4 seats, because sport seats similar to those in the S5 were offered in the B7 A4 S-line. In the US we didn't get those seats as part of our S-line package.

Re: Sit down in an S5. First Thoughts.

Actually the S5 are the same seats as are available in the current S6. They will not be in the standard models. The S-Line models get sports seats that are excellent but still not the same as the 'S' models are getting. There are pics of the S-Line seats on AudiUSA.com in the U.S. brochure.
