    Question Rear wheel barring install?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I got my car aligned the other day and I'm told I need new wheel barrings in the rear, both sides. Not really a suprise to me I knew it was coming. So my question is whats involved with the install? I know you need a special tool for this, but where can I get one and for how much? Also, how hard is it to actually do the work once I have the tool? I'm fairly handy with tools, I did my own suspension. My dealer quoted me about $80 a piece for the barrings. I'm guessing its all labor costs. What should I do? attempt to do this myself? or just forget the hassle and have them do it for me? Thanks!

Well $80 is a bargain i think. From ECS tuning, they sell rear bearing kit for 50 bucks each side. so $30 for labor is not that bad.

The procedure involves removing the whole hub assembly, which may or may not be a PITA. Once you get the whole hub out, I would recommend bringing it to a shop to have the bearing press out and the new bearing press in. I would say about 30 buck for both.

So I think $80 bucks is not a bad deal if it includes parts and labor. if you like to go for the experience then I would go for it.

I have to get my wheel bearing replaced to but im still under warranty so im letting the dealer tackle it for me.

I did them in the a4. I don't think it was that bad. No special tools...unless you want to get a press. Just take the whole hub assembly out and take it to a shop with a press...then reinstall.

I have 19" wheels. My Audi dealer wanted $180 for a quattro alignment. The local wheel/suspension shop (Big O Tires) wanted $60 for the 4wd alignment (though I haven't had it done yet).

No $80 for each wheel barring. I think I'm just going to take it somewhere. I'm really starting to get pissed at this car. So many things have been going wrong with it lately.

Hey man, at least you still have your car, unlike mine, which was sitting in Audi Norwalk for almost a month. And by the way, their service was.... no comment, dun even wanna get started. But the good thing is, baby is coming back this next week with a brand new rebuilt engine~

    Good luck
