    whats up guys,

i am a new member. i got a 2004 a4 front track with a 5 speed. today i got the giac flash at eurosport.

also did three dyno pulls...all after the flash. all the numbers are to the wheels.

    #1- 154.1 hp 195.9 tq
    #2- 149.7 hp 205.1 tq
    #3- 153.1 hp 195.0 tq

the horsepower numbers are really low....i dont know why....my car has 2400 miles on it....it was about 83 degrees temp. i called GIAC in irvine and the guy was really cool and really interested in why my car performed so low in hp numbers....also my car is completely stock besided the flash.......

anyone here have any idea whats up? GIAC is looking into it and will contact me later today

What Dyno was this on? The numbers have been highly variable based on the type of dyno used.

If it was a MAHA dyno it's not that low, about 180 hp chp. I think Eurocode did a chip test on a MAHA and all came out to between 175 - 189 hp w/GIAC around the mid 180's iirc. But yes, still a little low.

How did you like Eurosport Acc? I have an 04 a4 CVT fronttrak and got GIAC through them. Wasn't very impressed with their professionalism.

Unfortunatley, unless you've had a baseline there or had a stock a4 with you at the time of the dyno, there's not much we can glean from the data you presented.

Problem is, you need to compare those numbers to a stock baseline on the same numbers, preferably on the same day.

yeah i know....the problem is that i didnt have that much time today and they would have to strap the car to the dyno twice because the serial cable would not reach......so i did just after....

but when i called GIAC he said for me to come to irvine and they will reflash to stock and dyno and then flash and dyno.....

i am thinking the car needs to breathe.....so i am gonna put in the kn drop in filter.....and save up for exhaust

just wondering though....i have heard from some people that when they got chipped the car performed a lot better the next day for some reason

probably because it had a chance to get used to the new programming...

I agree with neo here regarding your numbers. You may actually be putting down 210hp to the crank...there is just no way to know without a baseline on that dyno. Dont start sweating it until you get your own baseline. You'll drive yourself crazy comparing it to other people's numbers when the two are not comparable. cheers! mike

    Hi Drew,

Without knowing what your car dyno'd at before there is really no way to say if that is high or low. A dyno is only really good to show a change. With the info presented we don't know what the change was.

If the crew at GIAC is willing to dyno the car with stock software and than with the GIAC code you should take them up on it.

Hope you are enjoying your car.

    Jeff

    Sparkplugs?

If you are local in the LA area, I can help you regain that lost 10-15hp.. copper plugs. I've seen day and night performance gains switching from platinum OE plugs to coppers.

I would love to find that lost 10-15hp. Would you be willing to help?

i talke to garret (president of GIAC) today and he was very helpful. he is really a cool guy!!! he is very curious to why my car performed low in hp numbers but the torque was so high.....

he says that i am the first front track customer to have gotten dynoed that he has heard from..........so he wants me to come in to their irvine location and is going to diagnose the programming and might tweek the software and do some dyno runs.........thats GREAT news to me=)

he did also recommend getting some colder plugs

today i also put in the k&n drop in filter......it was very simple to install....car feels slightly better in the top end......was going up the 241 toll road....a very long and steep hill....the car was accelerating nicely in fifth gear with the AC on........

definitely lemme know how things go.

i have an 04.5 a4 cvt fronttrak with GIAC as well. sometimes the car feels great and othertimes it just SUCKS.

i think it has to do with what kind of gas you have in the tank too...

    ive tried:

ARCO - OMG.. its SOO HORRIBLE!!!
SHELL - results simliar to ARCO
MOBIL - ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!! car felt so much more alive...
    76 - generally pretty good

i never knew how much the BRAND of gas mattered until i got a my car chipped. i think the quality of the gas really affects the engine since my car is both TURBO'd AND CHIPPED...

but definitely keep me posted on what garrett says about the CVT and the CHIP

You know, my car hasn't performed as well after going from Mobil to Shell gas. I have Chevron in the tank now and it's similar to Shell so I was beginning to think I was just imagining it. I'll have to try 76 and Mobil again to make sure. Oh, and sorry for the threadjack.

76 is the ONLY gas in CA that no longer adds MTBE, which is will it will run the best for any car. All other companies still use MTBE, as well as other additives to mask the true octane numbers.

MTBE is an oxygenate which is added to gasoline, that makes the combustion burn HOTTER (something you DO NOT want), so that the tailpipe will emit only H2O and CO2, and none of that other polluting stuff that comes out. This ultimately causes our cars (especially turbo'd cars) to run like SHIT, and make the mpg's goto SHIT as well. This was part of CA's "Clean Air" act (thank Grey Davis), where all refinereries must comply and "reformulate" their gas. However, a few years ago, they found small traces of MTBE inside the water supply at Lake Tahoe--for MTBE can pollute a water supply with just a few drops, and is a bigger pollution "threat". The government of the "People's Republic of California" then got a rude wakeup call, and repassed the law, mandating all refinereies to REMOVE MTBE from their gasolines...76 was the first to jump on this and remove their MTBE.

Do a search on "MTBE" on Yahoo, and see all the results you get on "Water Supply MTBE Cleanup"...

There is NO benefits of MTBE, other than it generally bumps up our gas prices $0.10-0.15 per gallon in general for that shit. MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) when used PROPERLY, in general will act as a knock-inhibitor (or "octane booster"), however, due to it's costs, many companies tend to "water down" their original mixture, then use the MTBE to bump up and mask the true octane. (Example: watered down 87 octane + MTBE = "91" octane).

Long story short.... STAY THE F*CK AWAY FROM MTBE! :)

And all that "Techron", "V-Power" and other shit, all contributes to the degradation of the quality of gasoline claiming to "clean" your injectors. If you used good gas to begin w/, there should be nothing to clean in the first place. :)

    dayam jeff... thats good stuff...

i TOTALLY did not know all of this...

assuming its all researched and true... im going to 76 from now on.

when i first got chipped my car was running on fumes... and me and jeff moss went to the local 76 and filled up. on my way home from jeff moss' place... OMG i think that was the FASTEST my car has ever felt...

probably good gas combined with the "honeymoon period" of being chipped...

im just craving MORE POWER now...

I has always heard 76 has very high detergent quantity and is very harsh on your fuel system, best to use once a month or so..AMS had been saying this..

    incorrect???

It is actually the exact OPPOSITE. It is companies like Chevron, Shell, and Arco who use high concentrations of detergent. Though this is not a BAD thing, some companies tend to get a little carried away with it, giving you more detergent than actual "gasoline", which makes the car run like crap. All in all, 76 does NOT have MTBE, which is the key issue.

AMS? Advanced Motorsport?...if this is the same person who told you this that I am thinking... all I can say is.. "no comment"
For that same personal also preaches using of Mobil-1 15w50 weight oil in our cars. :) I think I'm better off putting tar in my crankcase.

Thanks for the gas info Jeff, validates differences some people thought they felt but weren't sure if was because of other factors.

Asked a friend of mine who used to work related to this kind of environmental stuff and he knew about the clean air act but wasn't sure why some oil companies are still allowed to use MTBE. Thought ruling may have been only advisement or that they have X number of years to comply. Sucks that they don't have to comply immediately. So our 91 craptane may not even start out 91 before MTBE.
