    Question So what's next?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Well, I suppose I should introduce myself, I'm a Minnesota native, 15 years old, and drive (With a permit) a 97' Audi A4, 1.8T.

So I got the car with a few minor upgrades, and right now, I've got a full car audio system, the car is lowered (Roughly 2"), has a short-throw kit installed, and is chipped, although I don't know by what manufacturer.

My question is, what's my best bang for my buck upgrade? I'm more into the appearence of the car, and I realize this question is completely subjective, but I'd like your opinion. I've considered a new skirt for the car, or wheels, but also have thought about something that will improve the sound, like a cat-back exhaust, I've heard awesome things about Militek.

What about performance wise, is there anything that will be similar in back for buck gains?

Any classy skirt kits, or modest exhaust systems, I need a bit of a snarl when I really get into the throttle. What about intake, I've heard that the K & N Panel filter, as a direct replacement is about the only option. Any way I can get a bit of intake noise, and still some added power, the car just sounds so tame at the moment... It also looks a bit too tame.

Invest in a license, and save some money for the speeding tickets you will get.

After that, since the car is already lowered (you should find out what kind of shocks/springs) you could put some 18's on it, and that would drastically improve the look. There are a few options for bumpers/skirts/valences/lips.

Probobly true, I've been a motorhead all my life, and can't leave anything alone. So I'm kind of looking for an excuse to wrench on the car. I was thinking of a hybrid valve, but heard of the horrors they cause. I'd like to learn how to reroute, and open up my air intake, but then heard the troubles the turbo's extra heat causes, so I shy'ed away from that. I'd like to do a cat-back, but it's a ton of money for some pretty minimal gains. The K04 seems like a pretty cool thing to do, but that's way down the road.

you say your driving it with a permit, and you have a short throw shifter installed... it clearly says on the licenses here in ohio your not aloud to drive a manual tranny, you may want to look into that before you goto the BMV and try to take the test

Hmm...Around here it's perfectly legal (Thankfully) for me to drive a stick. As for the fart cannon...Not quite what I had in mind, although I'll take it into consideration ;-) I'm trying to get away from all these ricers, and make a nice looking, nice driving, German, automobile, not a spray painted, Honda Civic, with custom Campbell's soup exhaust.

I dunno, but I love Audis, and have my whole life, and have been a gear-head getting good grade all my life. My dad decided I deserved it I guess, so now it's in the garage. Strangely enough, all the other kids are really nice to me now, I wonder what the want...? *End sarcasm*

I've got my eye on a set of wheels for the car, I decided on 18s, because wouldn't the loss of rubber, in 19s, add a lot of strain to the suspension components?

I was looking at the painted lowers, that's really nice, but I don't know if I can bare to paint something that will take so much abuse, MNDOT (Minnesota Department of Transportation) apparently has something against paving roads correctly, so I get potholes, and the road breaks away into little chips, that just devour paint.

I'm enjoying the whole "Sleeper" factor of my car, in the sense that it is quite a bit faster than most people make it out to be, but I do admit, I like to hear what's going on under there, thus the intake question.

I was also toying with the idea of tinting my windows, but have come up with a few problems. 1) Police officers don't like the, since they mask what's behind the window. I'm also a young, male, and I'm a big kid, a gentle giant, but I don't think the police officer knows that, one more thing to get him mad isn't going to help my cause. 2) To get the look I want to achieve, you have to go a bit below legal, otherwise, the windows are still quite easy to see through.

I've heard that it is a good idea, that when being pulled over, it's a good idea to roll down all your windows, and have all passengers put their hands on the outside of the car. It makes the officer feel safer, and chances are they'll be nicer to you because of your consideration for them. Is this true, or does this just look awful suspicious?

    Any other ideas?

Find out what kinda chip you have, and consider going to an APR/GIAC if you want to go faster and have something less aggressive.

An exhaust can be custom made for under 500, so if you have some good software next I suggest 2.5" or 3" cat-back or turbo-back exhaust. High flow cats are expensive but a good idea if you don't want to run a test pipe.

For wheels, you have many many options. I'd suggest RS4 reps, BBS, Moda, some edgeracing.com wheels, and a few on tirerack.com. 17s and 18s are best, I don't suggest 19" wheels unless you live in a city with no potholes. Plus wheels will allow you to run a wider tire which means more traction to the ground, which means better handling. I suggest Falken Azenis for summer only tires, along with Bridgestone S-03s if you have the money and want something that will be a bit better in the rain.

A drop-in air filter will do nothing for your car, along with most any other intake mods available. Do not run an intake system unless you can make your own well designed system, and you understand you will only gain a sound and probably a loss in power. If you are going to replace the drop-in air filter, I would suggest an ITG from awe tuning. They're a foam filter, and fit directly in the stock air box. The only real advantage to this is that it lasts forever as opposed to paper filters which are good for about 10k-15k miles. That and a decent sound.

If you're chipped I also suggest getting a new Diverter valve. A 710N valve is 30 dollars from ECStuning.com and will last you about a year with hard boosting. You can also get a rebuildable Forge or Bailey for 120 dollars....it's up to you. Don't run a blow off valve that vents to air, please.

Ok I'm done. Motion to sticky my post ;o

i have never heard of the "hands out the window" before and i will NOT to that if i ever get pulled over again. That sounds really stupid. Why not all get out of the car and lie face down? Then the cop will know he has TOTAL CONTROL

In all seriousness, i was thinking about painting my lowers before but then i thought, why not just buy a kit of somesort.

I know why all of your friends are being more nice to you, its cause you have an audi and they realize that it turns girls on.

No, I wasn't going to run a blow-off. The hybrid valve was about as close as I ever even considered, and after my homework, realized it was a terrible idea, it was more for a chick factor. Try saying "Psst" in a crowded area. About 70% of women react, and virtually no guys do, thus the blow off.

The exhaust is something I'm pretty touchy on. I need it to be quiet for most driving, but it'd be nice to have a little bit of a snarl when I wanted it.

So 2.5 inch, or 3 inch? Obviously, the less backpressure (Larger tubing) will give me more power up top, while sacraficing a little low end, and vice versa. Which is best suited for the A4 in your honest opinion.

How do I find out who did my ECU work?

Also, I think I've decided on 18s, because I like to fill the wells, plus there seem to be more tires available.

I've given up on the intake, beyond keeping the filter clean.

So, am I on the right track?

Yeah you're on the right track.

To find out who did the ECU you might have to open her up. I've never done it but I doubt it's difficult.

As for exhaust, don't listen to the "2.5 inch or death" crap...bigger = better. If you don't want all out performance it's fine to go 2.5" but if you want to get as much as you can out of the car with sacrifice to a little noise...I'd say 3" turbo-back, no cat. Straight through muffler. As for mufflers stay away from cheap ones, go with straight through magnaflow, a high quality japanese one, etc. Stay away from Flowmaster they just live off their old name, being chambered you lose a LOT of flow with them or so I've heard. 2.5" is pretty decent

18s are what I have I will get you a pic...

Opening the ECU box is a simple 5 minute procedure, the other site (AZ) has good directions

As for the 3" exhaust, a little too big and unneccessary and it will actually decrease performance I have been told. Consider in the 2.25" (optimal for k03, k04 apps) to 2.75" (for the 28s and other big spoolers) range. Borla 2.25" and Milltek 2.75" are great choices...I just installed by borla not too long ago and I am very satisfied.

Heres what happens with a 3' exhaust:

The exhaust gases get cooler in the bigger 3' pipe. Towards the end of the piping the gases become more dense due to the decrease in temperature. Dense gases are harder to move and therefore can cause restriction. Thus performance is not a result of an increase in size, but instead a result of optimal conditions for flow. That's why no runs runs a 5' exhaust.

2.5 or 2.75 is enought to allow for increased flow without cooling the gases too much.

You won't see much gains on anything else in comparison to that chip. I'd say go w/ lowering and some rims. Shop around and you can get both for around $1000.

I'm already lowered, so that's not an issue. The no-cat idea sounds awful risky, I'm by no means a racer, just an enthusiast. I was thinking about just going with a cat-back system, rather than the whole deal. Here's an idea, that I took from dirtbiking. There's header wrap out, basically just a tape that can withstand high temperature, and holds the majority of it in. So less dense exhaust=more flow, correct? The only disadvantage I can posssibly think of is heat cracking, or warping. Anyone ever tried this.

And I think Borla and Militek are at the top of my list, as is APR. Still have my eye on a set of 18s, hopefully I can get them, and get them cheap. If things go right, I get those, wrapped in decent Kuhmo tires, for about $500. Nice wheels too, I'd show you a picture, but I don't want you stealing my sale ;-)

as for you hotsauce, i'd go with an ITG filter (may be a little pricey but it'll be worth it in the end) cause i have one lol. i'd go with rs4s or some mesh wheels with blacked out centers w/ polished lip if your car is black. that's what i'm planning on doing.

good luck and congrats on your car. enjoy it to the fullest.

Header wrap = iffy idea...it wouldn't make a huge difference at the end of the piping, and not much of one in the middle. And I definately wouldn't do it on the downpipe at least anywheres near the turbo. It gets WAY too hot there, you don't want to trap heat in more then it already is IMO.

Borla, Milltek and APR are all nice exhausts. You really can't go wrong with a name brand.

I've been an Audi junkie since I was like 8. We had the big V8 (Now the A8), a little red Audi, which I don't really remember...Then an Allroad, and now the A4. We've also had Porsches all my life. An 84 (I think) and now an 88, both red 911 cabs.

So, I was definately noticing the German quality over the other stuff we'd had (We're a car family), we had a Jeep, Lexus, some Volvos, an RX7...Pretty much everything, and my dad had owned plenty of cars before my time. I believe this is his 57th car, but he keeps coming back to German cars. Figured there had to be a reason. So ever since I was about 12, I've been "On the prowl" for cars.

I looked at some older Lexus SC models, but never really fell for them. I was pretty well set on either the Jetta 1.8 or the GTI, I had wanted an A4, but it was pricey. So, then more Audi love hit me. My ex-neighbor (Who moved *Insert Sadness*), who worked for the VW dealer, was planning on selling his 1996 A6. The man kept his car in perfect condition...You really don't understand the way he keeps things up. So I toyed with the idea, and was really considering it, but I came up with problems 1) It's an auto...I'm too much of a motorhead to drive an auto 2) It's a 2.8...Not bad stock, but not enough to really move that car like I want it to 3) It just isn't a kids car, it's a family sedan.

So I decided that my car was going to be an A4 if at all possible, but it wasn't looking promising, as the Jettas and GTIs were the only thing in our range. Well, miracle, we find a black A4, with the 2.8 and it's a stick. We drive it and love it, but it had a few problems. It was cheap though... So we were considering it, and on the verge of buying it, when the phone rings. It's Don, my dad's buddy at German Auto Works. My dad's bought about 10 cars from Don, they're better than business buddies.

Don tells us he has an A4, doesn't know a ton about it, but to come and take a look. So we go there, and I'm sold within about 3 seconds. Glowing Silver, 97 1.8T. I get in immediately, and notice the seats, something I'd never seen, but LOVED. Then I notice the shifter, short throw. So one of Don's workers is telling me about the car. ECU chip, it's loaded with almost all options, and is lowered. The guy who owned it last, got it as a 2nd car, about 20 years old, and just babied the thing. One of those cars that only gets serviced by the best technicians, at the best facilities.

So we decide to test drive it. Windows down, sunroof open. The first thing I hear is the turbo spool up. At that moment, I knew that this was the car. I was in love...But a car like this would surely go for about 10k, especially in the condition it was in; Perfect. Well, Don, wanting to be future business partners with me, gives me a deal, and a great one at that. He gave it to me for the price he got it off the auction block. He made ZERO profit on the car. Sold.

I owe this all to my dad, and to Don. I couldn't be more appreciative. I realize the car is plenty fast, and the only reason for upgrading the car, is so I can be with it, and my dad doesn't think I'm a total freak.

He's worried about me...I wax the car more times than it gets driven. I've been known to just sit in the car, for hours, and to spend even more time on the internet, learning how to work on it, tune it, drive it...I know that until I can drive the car to the edge, no upgrade will help me, but with the time I put into it, I know I'll reach any bar I set, so might as well wrench, if I can't drive (Alone that is).

So there's your sappy story for the day.

That's awesome, you sound like me. Appreciation for things is very important (and often lacking) in todays culture.

    Enjoy the car, mate

Already chipped, or so I'm told. I want to crack the ECU open and make sure this is all legit, and not some eBay thing. Exhaust is on my list of "To-Do's" and the Turbo is an idea, that I'm toying with.
