Horrible screeching sound.

ANyone ever experience a screeching noise in the front of your car. This happened to me today in the parking lot, it was like the front brakes were on the warning markers. It sounded like metal grinding on metal. I tried going forward slowly twice and both times it had the sound. Then I went reverse to se if it had the same sound, instead I heard a 'CLANK' so I stopped. I went forward again to put the car into a parking space but then the sound was gone. Wanted to ask if anyone might know what might be wrong.

I had a similar experience with my wife's Explorer. It turned out to be a pebble (a very hard one obviously) wedged between the pad and the rotor.
