I do, i had my car checked out before i bought it and the person before me didn't and now i have a leaky gasket. So ever since knowing that i do. I will usually open my door a crack so that the dome lights go on and the "bings" being. I let it cool down when the "bings" stop, which is like a min or so

The only time I turn off the car right way if the oil temp is under 200 degrees. Otherwise I always use the turbo timer.... minute and a half. At least 3min on hard drives.

If you run your car hard and the oil temp is slightly higher then your normal temp, you can actually see the oil temp start to drop if you let the car idle.

Cool-down is only really necessary if you've driven the car hard just before shutting it down. For example TRACK EVENTS. Under normal driving situations, it's probably not necessary (manufacturers of turbocharged cars take into consideration that the majority of buyers are probably idiots, much less enthusiasts), but of course it certainly won't hurt.
All bets are off, though, once you've extensively modified the car, or if you feel the need to drag race up your driveway on the way home from grocery shopping.

I always idle for a minute before shutdown, its no effort for me. Our turbos are low-inertia and if you let it spool down a bit it will do nothing but good. I also use Synthetic Oil so I know that there will be no oil "coking" in my turbo bearings after shutdown. A little care and attention to my engine/turbo health is no trouble and it makes me feel better.

Or you could simply drive normal for a few miles or minutes before you get home or wherever.

it uses basically no gas. the $$ for amoutn of gas wasted is far less than $$ used to buy a new turbo

I agree, I let mine sit for a min (door chime runs 1 min) under normal conditions and when I really get on it 5 mins. I was going to put a turbo timer in but after working at an Audi dealer and seeing what Techs don't know what to do with turbo timered cars and the cars we had in where people screwed up their wiring trying to put them in, no thanks. I'm not that lazy anyhow, nor is my wife.

With the above mentioned method I saw the great shape my old K03 was in with 90K on it when the K04 was installed. A little TLC goes along way.

Good question, I would say drive easy for the last 5 mi or so to the station. That is just as good a idling before shut down.

If you shut it off for a couple minutes and then restart, then it's not much of an issue. It's more of an issue when you run your turbo until it's red hot and then leave it there to cool off. Since the oil is not flowing, it cooks in those narrow lines that run to it and you risk clogging, which will means less oil to the turbo, and potential failure over time.

If you have a boost gauge, you can see that the majority of the time under normal driving, you rarely are boosting. Most of the time you drive in a vacuum state. Unless you're pounding on it, you really don't have to worry much about the cool down. Simply driving normal for the last few minutes to you destination is enough.

We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
    -Theodore Roosevelt, 1907
