How much can the A4 1.8T be modded?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey wats up fella's?

    New guy here :)

I'm going to be trading in my current car for another car soon, and although i'as solely looking into the Lancer Evo8 at first, the Audi A4 has been getting my attention a lot lately.

I've been doing a LOT of research lately on the A4, and its kinda overwhelming of how much stuff there is to do for these cars. Its getting kinda confusing.

I'm more into japanese cars, and have gone through a Honda and an Acura, and have a good amount of knowledge on other imports as well. But when it comes to European cars, its a little different. All these companies that i've never heard of. Also i've never had a turbo'd car before, so there are many things that are new to me.

I'm a guy who loves modding his cars to the fullest, show and go. I currently have an Acura TSX that is just getting to be too slow for me. I want to get the 1.8T Quattro A4 6MT because its looks are beautiful, and I figure since its the infamous "1.8T" motor, there should be plenty of mods available for it, performancewise.

Like I mentioned above, i'm not too familiar with everything that is made for the A4, i'm trying to learn. So could someone point out what performance parts, or turbo upgrades are available for this car?

I'm looking to make about 300whp out of this car. Is this possible? I think APR is coming out with a kit that does something close to 300whp. I spoke to a rep from APR, and he said it would be around $5k roughly for the kit, and then another $1k for the intercooler.

Thats all I know about what is available for the A4 1.8T hehe.
I know there are different chips by APR and GIAC. Which is better? What kind of gains can be expected from the chips?

Flat out, after driving the 1.8T A4, i think there's barely enough power to move the car itself. So I can't leave that stock for too long.

Also I do VERY spirited driving everyday, so I need a car that can keep up w/me and handle really good. How is the handling on the A4's? Are they easy to cut in & out of traffic with?

I have tons of questions, but these are all I can think up of for the time being. Sorry if I asked a question thats already been answered somewhere, i'm still searching through all the threads.

    Thanks a lot fella's!

    handling = good

    speed = not good

if you want to hit 300whp with an A4 good luck because you'd be one of the handful. i guess it is possible but not with anything out on the market. you'd have to do something custom, unless you can run on race gas all the time.

oh also apr has been wanting to release that kit for about forever and a half.

whenever they claim, they just keep pushing back the date. also i doubt a modded a4 can handle like a modded lancer just cuz its so damn heavy. maybe if you chopped it up some.

If you want good power for the money you spend I suggest going with the Lancer evolution. A few buddies of my have that car and I've heard its possible to make 300whp without upgrading the turbo. For 5k you spend on the Audi, you will most likely get around 280-290 crank hp, on the other hand if you spend 5k on the lancer evolution you will get way more power. I hear the hks turbo upgrade kit should make at least 400whp for the lancer. hope this helps.

If you wana make A4 1.8T fast... wait till APR Stg3 or get T-28 with Revo Software. so you can go about 300hp..

If you do a search.. You'll see a guy (Silence) beat M3 SMG with T-28 and Revo...

and I would go with Revo instead of APR or GIAC..

If it is your first Turbo.... You'll like it...

TAP (www.tap1.com) supposely can make 300+hp happen. But, I would put my money on STi or Evo for the kind of power that you are looking for.

For 4000, Eurocode provides a "kit" that consists of EO5 Turbo upgrade, Revo Big Turbo software, FMIC, Test Pipe, Injectors, and tuning that will let you put down about 220 HP to the ground, depending on which dyno you use.

Comparing the A4 with a EVO8 is an unfair comparison. The A4 is not meant for the track from the factory. It is a posh ride that can, in the midrange be fairly peppy in the 1.8T model. The EVO8 is meant for hauling ass. I know the last EVO that was on the market here in the states had a pretty lack luster interior.

If money isn't an option, and if you would prefer luxury over speed, then the A4 should be your choice. At the same time, you can mod the A4 to squeeze a lot of horsepower out of the motor if you have the money. Caveat emptor, there have been NO long-term tests with these higher horsepower set-ups.

It seems like a lot of people have problems with fuel pumps, water pumps and other mechanical parts down the road, but that may be expected even if you don't mod the car.

    Good luck!

I think if you're looking for a turbo'd car along with modding potential, take a look at the B5 S4. Slap a couple K04 turbos into that engine and you should be looking at a fair amount of power. You can probably get one for a fair price now, although it will be used.

however, if you like the B6 bodystyle more (like me) you will be hard pressed to get 300 whp from our engines. First and foremost, our cars are pretty heavy, especially for the 1.8T motor, but most people buy Audi's for the luxury factor, not the speed. But if you have money to play with, i'd suggest the S4 or possibly a 3.0Q with a custom supercharger or turbo conversion.

    Good luck in your decision

Thanks for all your responses guys!

I think I forgot to mention this before, so I'll say it now. I realize both cars are TOTALLY different cars. But they are both appealing to me. If I go w/the EVO it will totally be performance oriented. If I go w/the A4 it will be a mix of performance and looks.

I compared both cars, the EVO and A4, I realized the A4 is only 85lbs heavier than the EVO is. Does 85lbs make a HUGE difference? Is the EVO able to put the power to the ground more efficiently?

What other companies make turbo kits for the A4?

I'm not looking for the A4 to handle as good as the EVO, but I still want it to handle fairly good, atleast better than some other cars.

Yea thats what I say to myself, but then LOOK AT YOUR CAR!!! Thats what makes me want to just get the damn A4 lol. My favorite A4's so far is yours, and the black one w/eyelids thats in your car club. Then there's also this other lightblue widebody one who got his flares done at M1 Autobody too.

I have a few questions for you.
    1. what performance mods do you have done?
    2. does your car feel able to pull all its weight, especiallly w/the huge rims?
    3. I want to get my fenders extended too(if I get the A4). How did your shop do them? did they cut them and weld in extra sheetmetal in between? and how much did they charge you?

    Thanks for your help :)

phs0316: Can you give me some more info on the REVO stuff? What is it exactly? a chip upgrade? And whats a T-28? turbo? Sorry for all the noobiness, but i'm kinda new to these cars..

A4 - Oh Snap: What kinds of problems have people been having w/their A4's? And are there any other problems w/the A4 that a potential buyer should be aware of?

This may be a stupid question, but if I get a boost controller, or chip upgrade that raises my boost, will I be able to hear the turbo spooling up?

Thanks for all your help fella's, i appreciate it :)

you'll be able to hear the turbo spool up a little better with a chip upgrade. but when you upgrade the chip, you want to make sure you upgrade your Diverter valve so that it can handle the extra boost. furthermore, if you really want to heighten the sound, you can get a CAI, but many here disagree with the use of one because they don't believe it does much performance wise

You got the Boostedtech CAI right? Is it loud during spool up and when you release throttle?

yes. i rode in Cybrchaddy's B5 with a k04, injectors, etc. and you could really hear the turbo spool up. right afterwards, we took a ride in mine, and it sounded just a little lower, but definetly noticeable. the turbo tends to...roar...when under heavy load ~4k rpms...which is also kind of cool, but you can really hear the blow off when you throttle it hard from 2k-4k rpms. hope i answered your question

    1) Test pipe, chip, short shifter, exhaust downpipe, fmic, nx express intercooler sprayer, coilovers, sway bars, brakes, intake
    2) yes, my car feels quite a bit slower with the big rims
    3) fenders extended with fiberglass with a thin sheet of metal for support, PM me for the price I'm not supposed to say it
