Couple questions for those with avants...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
We really need an avant only forum. Not to be concieted but just for questions like I have.

    1. I have the retractable mesh that goes up behind the rear seats and connects to the roof. Or if the seats are forward it connects above the front seats. Is this an option or do all b5 avants have this? I was thinkin of sellin mine if it was an option or if anyone would want one.

    2. The roof antena covers am/fm/cellular. What is the one in the rear drivers side window for? Or is it a defroster? If its a defroster why isn't it in the passenger side as well?

    3. Ok one sub is nice but what about two? Has anyone tried to put another factory sub in the other side of the trunk area? I know its probably molded wrong but some customization might work. Anyone who has upgraded want to get rid of one cheap?

    Ok thats it for now...

    I have an 01.5 S4 avant.

    Hi Ben,

I like the idea of an Avant forum. I've been having trouble with my winshield-wiper/washer stalk, but I think it is a different part number from the sedan's due to the rear wiper. Those sedan guys don't have a clue ;-)

Anyway, I think there are two different Avant cargo nets, a hard mounted one used to keep pets from trying to drive, and another one with multiple mounting options that comes with a carry bag. The first one is about $360 and the second is $270 at clairparts.com. I know this because I tried to sell mine earlier this month on this forum (for only $90) but there were no takers. (Still available.) I think the second, softer one was standard, but not sure.

No idea on the antennae thing, but my old NSX used to have two antennas, one retractable and one in the rear window. The head unit would select the stronger signal.

Subwoofer: interesting idea. I have a 12" Boston Acoustics sub and an Alpine mono sub amp that I was thinking of mounting back there in the stock location. Trouble with that is the (lack of a) sealed box, and the dimensions (cubic feet of air) behind it would probably be all wrong. I'm not into audio enough anymore to pay a shop to mold me a custom enclosure, but I may tinker myself if I had a clue. I've never actually seen the sub, but I've read that it's a sealed enclosure with a built-in amp and no port.
Let me know if you do any experimenting.

Hey, did the S4 come with a full size spare? I'm thinking of upgrading my A4 with the Avus' wheels and people tend to sell them by the 5's.

I thought all s4's had the full size spare but for some reason i am guessing the avants didn't. Mine has the space saver but there is definately room for the full size one in there. I have the net that is hard mounted that would keep the pets from driving. I have no use for this so would like to get rid of it. The other one i am guessing is the oone that lays flat on the floor of the trunk and connects to the 4 mounting points. I wouldn't mind having that but i don't think it is worth near what it costs. Especially since it will be rarely used.

    Thanks for the ideas.

And I would love to see a pic of the sub if anyone has uncovered it. I hate trying to tear off the carpet trim unless i need to. Never seems to want to go back on the same.

Ben, as I mentioned, I don't have much use for the soft net, either, so it's available. Unfortunately, I have little use for the one you have (no dogs and I can't wait for the day my 7-month-old can drive!).
It was my guess that the S4's came with 5 full size rims, while the A4's had an idiot-spare. Guess that idea's shot to hell!

    1. Where is it? They told me it was an option. Can't find a dog mesh in my avant. I should have one. My bigdog doesn't like driving but the little one does. pics? Do you think the net could be retrofit into a sedan?
    2. OT but I'd like someone to make an Enfig-style flexible stubby fuba antenna mast, black, 6mm I think.
    An avant forum sounds good.
    Thanks

Ben the rear cargo net that goes across the avant was an option. I'm also interested in purchasing it from you. My dogs would thank you. I have the cargo net that goes in the "trunk". Howz about a trade. I don't use that one.
I'm not sure what the other thing in the rear window is. My 99.5 doesn't have it. I would be interested in finding out though.
A sub won't fit in the other side, there's no room. If any avant owners are interested I'm considering fiberglassing a few enclosures when I make mine. And they will be very well built, not a couple thin layers.

SF I'm also having trouble with my rear wiper but am unsure if it is the motor, controller or stalk.

Kombi the net won't retrofit into a sedan. The avant has mounting tabs for it, sedan doesn't.

I will post up some pics of it. Don't know if i want to trade. Maybe. But I need money than a net i will rarely use. But I will think about it.

So your avant didnt have the actuall retractable net but it did have the mounting points on the ceiling? Does it allso have the two clips on the back of the 60% section of the rear set that it clips too? Or would I need to take those off. Well i will take some pics soon.

Re: Couple questions for those with avants...

    1. Is this an option or do all b5 avants have this? Nope, my '99 doesn't have it. Don't really have a need for it either. BTW, mine doesn't have mounting clips on the headliner either.

    2. Not 100% sure, but I think it's a defroster. Never really thought to check it out. My '99 doesn't have it, but I know Moops' '00 has it.

    3. No, but I'm really interested in changing my sub out for maybe an 8" or 10" sub. Obviously, it depends on what I could retrofit. Anyone w/ pics? I really would like to see what it looks like when you take it apart. I don't really want to take mine apart, just to put it back together un-modeed

4ingDrive -- I may be interested in a sub enclosure if you are going to make one that integrates into the interior (ie where the OEM sub is rather than taking up space in the cargo hold).

My problem is with my FRONT washer and headlight washer -- regarless of whether I move the stalk toward me or toward the dash, the same thing happens: the rear wiper activates. I'm guessing it's the control unit/stalk that needs to be replaced.

Email me privately to continue so we don't take over Ben's post: [email protected]

    Thanks, Scott

netting did not come with all avants. you can sell it for $$$. it's to keep your cargo from flying to the front when you brake hard!

don't know what you refer to by the driver's side cellular thing. post a pick. i do know that only the avants came with an interior motion sensor where the override (off) switch is on the lower b-pillar on the driver's side. you'll hear your horn honk if you leave your windows and/or moonroof ajar and a large breeze hits.

all avants came with a half-sized spare. probably to reduce weight. it can easily hold a 16" full sized spare. the s4 17" will take some wiggling around and you may have to remove the rear plastic support (which surround the latch that the hatchback door locks onto.) don't know if a 16" wheel will fit on an s4 though- maybe with the correct offset...

hth. btw, nice nogaro avant ben!

That looks pretty sweet. I dunno if we have that much room in the b5's though...do we?

Looks like I started an uprising for avants!

It's all good. I *KNOW* I don't have time to do it. If I did, I'd probably do something else... hehehe It really does look good, and one of these days I'll find the time to do something like that. I'm just not into audio like I used to. Now it's all home entertainment for me...If I'm in my car, I want to DRIVE it. I don't just cruise anymore. I guess it's my age showing again.
