    Gas Mileage Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I have an 04 1.8T USP Quattro w/ no mods. I am getting between 240-280 miles per full tank of 91 on Costco gas from Irvine. All miles are from city driving. Should I be concern about mileage? I only have 2000 miles on the car. I hear some people get up to 400 miles per gallon.

    Thanks!

oh i tested my car by the way. i have a 1.8t fwd manual with giac and a CAI. i got just over 450 miles on the tank when i hit 0...then drove another 10 miles with no problems. thats when i started gettin scared and filled up.

the milage counter tells me usually around 550-565, highest at 615. it lies =)

400 never heard of. 340 highway miles but 400 thats far fetched.
you'll probably get 300 or so highway miles.

this is true... it DOES lie...

the 450 was about 50/50 in terms of highway/city driving

all normal driving except 2 nights of racing. i think i could maybe break 500 if i tried hard enough.

WTF. How are some of you guys getting so many miles? I'm hoping a test pipe and Revo will fix this problem.

Accurate mileage doesn't kick in until about 3k miles, but you should still be getting better mileage than that. There are so many factors.. driving habits (when you shift/aggressiveness), where you drive (city/highway), weather (hot/cold), whether you are driving in hilly or flat terrain, etc

    There are so many factors..

Accurate mileage doesn't kick in until about 3k miles
    >> But my trip meter says 240 miles when I roll into the pump, Low Fuel indicator is on with estimation of 5 miles to go, re-fill is 15 gallons

    1) driving habits (when you shift/aggressiveness),
    >> mild-mannered, shift at 3-4K but there are some bitches in NPB that ride my bumper so maybe 5K once in a while

    2) where you drive (city/highway)
    >> Irvine to Newport Beach and back, Monday through Friday

    3) weather (hot/cold)
    >> Beach cities weather that 95% of America can only dream about although its been kind of muggy lately

    4) whether you are driving in hilly or flat terrain, etc
    >> Jamboree between University and San Joaquin kicks this cars ass. I'm sorry Audi.

I have an 04 6sp quattro. I normally get around 300 miles on a tank, and thats 80city/20hwy. I just hit 3000 miles yesterday so if thats when gas mileage starts being accurate we shall see. I did notice better gas mileage after I got GIAC chipped(dont ask, I would have thought the opposite too) and obviously it makes sense that quattro cars would get less mpg as they are hauling 200+ lbs more around. I am also playing around with different gears at different speeds and noticed a big increase lately at putting it in 5th at anything over 40mph and cruising. I cant recall ever using 6th yet, maybe once when I was cruising at 100 but otherwise a useless gear. I know I could hit 400+ miles on a tank if I was all highway. I avged 30 mpg the one weekend I drove to and from Atlantic City.

I got a 1.8T FWD w/ tiptronic modded with the REVO chip, and I get around 425-450 miles per gallon... that is, if don't go into boost all the time and try to keep the rpms around 2k and not above 3k.

Damn it would suck to only get under 300 miles per tank...I think I already spend too much on gas.

Last tank of gas I got 415 actualy miles out of it. Before that one, I got 355...but I adjusted my driving by shifting between 2500 - 3000 and slowed down to within 10 MPH of the speed limit. It helped out.

I do a lot of city driving...my average speed is 35MPH according to the car's display.

The highway is where it really shines...I did a test last night and got the following results (with the A/C on and in 5ht gear):

    55 MPH - 43 MPG
    65 MPH - 36 MPG
    75 MPH - 32 MPG

shifting at 2K? I would never be able to keep up with suburban city traffic if I shifted every gear at 2500 RPM. I have to shift between 3500 and 4000 just to keep up with most of the traffic. The powerband is different on a FWD 5-speed. The car definitely feels broken in now at 2000 miles. Before, the car would feel very underpowered in all gears, but now the turbo is much more noticeable sound and power-wise.

One of these days, I'll drive to Vegas. I will cry tears of joy if I can make it there and back on one tank of gas. It is about 240 miles one-way from my house.

SupraRZ, what color is your car, do you have the USP model? I have seen a lot of new A4s in Irvine lately.

When you say you floor it, how often, if ever at all, do you take it to the redline? Is there even a point to push the motor that hard? I heard the boost on the stock turbo starts to level off and drop at 5000 RPM. Is there any truth to that?

By the way, my mileage is 99% city / 1% highway.

OhSnap, I dont have the USP package, it's ocean blue metallic with Pacific Audi paper plates.

Let's see... flooring it... hmm... whenever I need to accelerate, it's petal to the ground, shift at redline. each and every light. When I'm moving and need to speed up, I downshift 2 gears and floor it :)

The power seems to fall off at 5500ish RPM, but something with the revving/shifting at redline that gets me excited when I drive :)

Actually, I was late to work earlier this week and floored it from home to work and found that shifting at 3000rpm vs shifting at 6000rpm Makes a 4mpg difference... 15mpg and 19mpg. I just happened to look at the MPG gauge as I pulled up.

Nice. You just taught me something new. I never knew that there is a MPG reading available. I gotta read this manual. If I had known, I'd be watching that thing 24/7.

I have never shifted past 5000K, but I'll keep the MPG thing on at all times. It'll be interesting to see what kind of MPG you can get after you put on mods.

    This car is so sweat.

i have an 03 1.8TQ 5Speed and last time i filled up i had gotten about 425 miles on 15.5 gallons. But this was based on 75% highway and 25% city. I'm revo'ed and i drive fairly conservatively unless i'm in a hurry. Normally i'll get about 25-26 MPG on a normal fillup

i find that hard to believe...shifting at 2k doesnt get you anywhere as our turbos dont really spool...but i also dont think you need to shift at 3500 just to keep up. i shift at about 2800 outta first and 2500 outta other gears and i keep up with traffic fine.

When I let my dad drive my 1.8t, his exact comments were "I thought this car has 170 hp?" That was because he shifted at 2500rpm. Then I told him to shift at redline :)

Guess it depends on traffic but when i was stock i usually shifted between 3k and 4k. Chipped, between 2.8k and 3.6k. BTW i get sh***y has mileage, computer says i average 20.6 but when i calculate it at the pump I only get around 19. I consider myself an pretty conservative driver but

Yeah, but don't you have a 5 speed front wheel drive model? I have an almost fully loaded 6 speed quattro. Isn't my car at least 100 lbs heavier than yours?

I've got a 5spd Quattro and get about the same miles to the tank city driving. I think that is normal. Just a funny thing, going to the E05 didn't change my mileage at all. I thought it would get worse because of the bigger injectors but it didn't.

Cool, don't need to be spending any more $$ on gas. Actually, w/E05 you hardly have to dip into the throttle to cruise around town--so responsive.
