Loud "Clunking" is *not* control arms...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Coming back from waterfest I noticed a slight clunk when traveling at high speeds...

As the trip progressed the clunking got worse, and is now audiable outside the car, and at speeds < 20mph.

I noticed the sound almost goes away when turning left, which leads me to believe it is the drivers side front wheel. (I figured that because of where the sound seems to be coming from)

Under light braking it is really loud, and under heavy braking it seems to go away.

It also seems to go away under heavy acceleration.

    Any ideas?

I think I've narrowed it down to either a wheel bearing or a CV joint...

Have you noticed any grease on the wheel?

A wheel bearing doesn't clunk, rather it's more of a whirring noise that is repetitive relative to speed, and is hardly audible at higher speeds, and is most noticeable around 20-30mph.

No, I inspected all boots and they all looked solid. No grease or anything. All boots are "Dry" with no visible cracks or leaks...

Sounds like maybe you have a messed up caliper bracket. I'd take off the wheel and wiggle it to see if that's it. Maybe a bolt came out or something.

Yes, you can just check for tears, and often you'll notice a grease build up on your wheel after it tears and leaks it all out, which sprays on your rim.

As far as I could tell, everything in there is A-OK, jacked up the car, wiggled the wheels, re-torqued the wheels back on to 85 ft/lbs, no change.

I am taking it to the dealership tomorro wto have them diagnose.

Hopefully it is not too expensive, waterfest left my wallet a little light...

Be sure to post your results, for future reference. Good luck, hopefully it's nothing costly.
