The same thing i thought when i was looking into getting in the audi scene.
    They are to different engines.
the 2.8 is a lot less modifable than the vr6 . Intake, exhaust and maybe some pulleys powerwise upgrades
balls to the walls supercharge it other than that not a modifiers car.
if you want tunability get a 1.8
if keeping it stock and looks get the 2.8

audi just wanted to be fancy and call their awd something different

I have both of these in the garage. A 30v 2.8 and a Jetta VR6. The VR6 is a great engine. Good power, great throttle response. Where I see a difference is when you want to really push the car. That Audi seperates itself at that point.

While quattro is a awd system, it is heralded as the the best.

also when we're the 30v v6's made and the 12v v6's made? i don't really plan to mod really, just exhaust (TT with a borla or flowmaster), intake, coilovers and a set of bbs CH's to start maybe an S4 bumper conversion when i learn more about them. but i don't really see the point in highly modding a daily driver (motorwise)

97 was the birth of the 1.8T in the A4.

And as far as daily drivability, I've been chipped/modded since about 30,000 miles. I now have about 105,000 miles, and I've had no engine problems, and most do not believe me when I tell them my car is about 8 years old. It's as good as new. Next major maintenace will be at about 150,000 miles, at which time I'll change the t-belt again.

Mods don't deteriate the life of the car, it's the owner that does. If you care for your car it will last a long time.

Well heres the thing... you put a $500 chip in a 1.8T and it is just as powerful and fast as the 2.8 but with better mileage and less weight over the wheels. That's why peopel regret it if they plan to tune. Now, if you are adding and exhaust or something on your 2.8 the gains are insignificant. Gains on a 1.8t with an exhaust and downpipe are slightly more noticable because of the better flow out of the turbo. In the end it is up to you. The 2.8 is a fine commuter car, but the 1.8t is the tuners car.
