I know this is probably a long shot, but would anyone here know how to hard wire a Passport 8500 radar detector to the A4 with the Direct Wire Smartcord?

Any help would be greatly appreciate it!

It would be quite easy, just ground the black wire and run the red wire to the lug under you knee bolster that has power when the key is on. I don't recall which number the lug is, but you can easily find it with a multimeter.

I heard that you can also tap the positive wire into the fuse box. Eithe jam it into a empty slot, or use a "add a circuit" fuse. Would that work, or is that a bad idea to mess with the fuse box?

Get a fuse tap at radio shack. Tap the postive lead to a fuse in the fuse box (I used the empty rear wiper fuse slot...it'll need a fuse obviously). Ground the negative lead to the car. Run the wire behind A pillar and headliner.

I stripped an inch long section of the wire, not near the end, looped the exposed copper around one prong on the accessory fuse, and reinserted it. For steath, you can push the wire behind the trim along the roof of the car and have come out along the rear-view mirror. It will turn on when the keys are in the ignition, and turn off when they aren't. There is also a bolt right near the fuse box, underneath the fuse cover, that makes a good ground.

This was my chosen way to install it because not only is it completely reversable on both ends (it doesn't damage the car or the radar) you can remove it in about one minute. If you need to use the wire for something else, a layer of electrical tape should suffice to shield it and have it back in like-new condition.
