    S6 LED DRLs on a B7

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Posting here as well because I know at least 2 B7 A4'ers that wanted to do this.

I finally decided to go through with this install. I bought the LEDs a while ago and was planning to do the install myself. I quickly found out that this was not going to be an easy install. The LED array is wider than the fog area and attaching it to the bumper would not be an easy task. As a result I enlisted the help of a local body/performance shop that has a really good reputation on the local forums.

Am I a poser for putting an S6 piece on an S4? Sure. Call me whatever you like. I have RS4 pedals and RS4 replica wheels as well, so I guess it's a bit of a theme with my car.

The install is not done, so I only have some in progress shots. I'm not sure exactly when it'll be done, but if it's not done by this Friday then it won't be for another week or two. I lost the fog lights (my choice) because there just wasn't enough room for fogs and the LEDs both in terms of physical fitment and visual appeal. We decided to mod the stock fog grille to fit in with the LED array to keep a slightly more OEM look so it doesn't look like it's just stuck on.

Here are the in progress shots:

The only visual parts that are cut are the fog light holders. You can see that the outside is recessed behind the bumper but the inside sits flush with no need to cut a notch.

    Both sides on.

    The grille in progress

Not having my car to drive sucks! But I think it'll be worth it.

    Re: S6 LED DRLs on a B7

I've been thinking about doing this on my B6, but when I think about the amount of work it would take to make it look OEM, I quickly lose interest. By the looks from your pictures, it looks like a lot of work as I expected, but I must say you are going about it the right way. The last couple pictures I can see it come together nicely, and it was a good idea to lose the fogs. Makes me want to give it a try still, but not sure if it is worth the time and money. But in anycase, it looks great so far, and it will look even better once you get those fired up!

What shop is doing the install? It's good to see someone finally following through on this idea, I think it will look awesome when it's done.

This is one of those mods that's good if you got serious cash to burn. I can't say it doesn't look nice so far, please post more pics!

Forgot to mention that. HAP (Huntington Automotive Performance and they also go by Huntington Automotive Repair and Body Shop). They do regular body work and stuff as well as performance mods. Peter is the man to talk to. He's got skills and so do the other guys at the shop.

Here are some pics of other installs. Really not a fan of the B7 install and for some reason the B6 install looks a bit out of place with it at the bottom to me, but I'm picky.

If you want to make it work like the S6 as well (dimmer at night/with headlights and brighter during the day/no headlights) then you can use that circuit. Just limits the power going to the LEDs with pulse width modulation. Easy stuff for a EE.

I wouldn't say I have cash to burn. I'm a frugal guy other than when it comes to my hobbies, which includes the car. I'm not just aimlessly spending money. I have it all budgeted out. I'm a dork, I know.

i wonder how that would look on a b6 usp. I think the s6 leds are too big for that grill area tho. Mind to tell me how long it is?

As long as it doesn't look anything like that other B7 you posted it should be a pretty decent mod. Good luck!

    Re: S6 LED DRLs on a B7

Damn, I forgot how long they are. MadAudi (where I got them from) lists the dimensions at 20"Length X 3"Width X 5.5" Depth. I want to say those dimensions are a bit off because the whole thing curves, but that is probably a good guess. If you have access to a B7, the curvature and length is almost exactly the lower part of the fog area. I didn't want them to be down there so we had to tuck the outside a bit.

Has anyone tried to put these on a B6 S6 yet?
Thanks! That's the plan...I showed those pictures to Peter at HAP and he said something along the lines of "If I do that to your car you can shoot me." Good man.

    Re: S6 LED DRLs on a B7

Yeah, it doesn't look good on that B6. First off it looks like they were slapped on, and 2nd they need to be above the fog lights. I think it looks good on the grey B7 in terms of overall flow and fitment, however still somewhat of a hack job. Yours should look great though since you are spending the time and money to mold them in and the location should be ideal.

I believe they can be made to look good on the B6, but I think it would require the right bumper, and some custom fabrication/molding to look right since the S6 LEDs are not the ideal fitment for the B6.

    They do looks sweet though...sigh....

Looks awesome on the B7 cabrio. IMO they definitely need to be mounted on the top of the fog light opening to look right. Your install is 999999x cleaner than the cabrio -- should look OEM . Keep us updated.

    Re: S6 LED DRLs on a B7

I'll post a figure once it's done. No saying what it'll be now. We talked ballpark numbers and he said he wouldn't charge for R&D since this is his first time and he can leverage this when other people want similar installs.

The basic wiring will be an independent switch that is ignition controlled. I haven't stopped by to see exactly how he's wired it up, but I'm heading there tomorrow and I'll ask him then.

I was thinking about doing RS4 mesh with the grille but the honeycombing from the RS4 fog grille I have was a little too big for it to look decent. That might be something that is added later on if I really feel like it's lacking, but honestly I think it'll look good as it is.

That was the first thing he asked me when I brought the car in. He goes "are you sure nobody's made a kit for this?" to which I say "yea I'm pretty sure" and then he goes "ok, cool, well i like a challenge so here are my thoughts..." He's got mad skills.

have you ever considered the way of filling up the wholes like how our 3.2s naturally are covered..that piece of plastic.... i figured the rs4 mesh might look weird if its not on right and just imagining it already feels weird...thats how i plan to fill the gap..anyways looking forward to your results/final product=)

I picked up the car on Friday but the grilles weren't completely done, so it looks a bit ghetto atm. The lights work and everything though. I'm going to get the grilles put on Tuesday or Wednesday, so I'll take pics then and post them up.

I don't have to worry about that. There is a radiator over there though, but the mesh wouldn't block enough airflow to make any difference. If anything, the LEDs themselves block the most air.

    Re: S6 LED DRLs on a B7

Do you guys think the LED's would look good on the bottom of the fog area also? I think that is the way I will do mine, but I really like it the way enigma is doing it.

Enigma - You didn't have to alter the bumper in any way, right?

As of right now I'm planning on going Wednesday during lunch. I should get there around noon. I'll let you know for sure in this thread before then.

Honestly, the first suggestion at the shop was "why not put them on the bottom of the opening." They fit really well in the bottom. Very minimal amount of cutting needed. But I just don't think they look right at the bottom. Kind of like the B6 in this thread.

The bumper definitely has to be altered. That was one of the "conditions" of the install. This is a one way thing. There's no going back to completely stock. The holder for the stock fog gets completely removed. Also a little part of the inside of the bumper was trimmed, but that part is not visible.

Can't wait to see more pics! How are they planning on finishing the grilles once the filler has cured? Some kind of plastic-like coating, or just some flat black paint? Very jealous, should look awesome...
