    borla or magnaflow muffler?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,
I have 2002 A4 1.8t, thinking of just replaceing stock muffler, which would sound good borla or magnaflow, I dont want it loud. remus is just to expensive. I heard borla are loud but not sure on a stock piping? Magnaflows are good to but not sure about loudness compared to borla. sound clips?

    thanks

Borla Vs. Magnaflow... I feel like I am back on the Mustang forums! Anyway, I personally like the Magnaflow myself.

im thinkin about getting some too...

i was doing some research and i came across the magnaflow 14326. supposedly its not too loud and its SHINY!!!

i was gonna take off my vibrant tips and weld them onto the magnaflows...

i cant seem to get a good price on these mufflers though...

the lowest i found was like 78-80 per muffler...

    is that a good deal?!

    i have no idea...

Thats about par for mufflers. You might be able to find them cheaper, but not much. I remember paying about the same for Flowmaster a couple years back execpt it was for a truck and a whole system installed cost me $180 with tip

    hi fong,
Yea I think the magnaflows muffler runs around that price, where did you get the stock#, will that one fit? I was thinking of the borla muffler the universial turbo muffler, they run around the same to. From what I heard the magnflow sound nice, I think its much cheaper then the remus.

Well a couple reasons. One, the shop gives me good deals (thinking about having them do a custom setup on the A4). Two it was only catback, so there wasn't much custom tubing. And 3, the biggest reason, there is only one muffler! Either way, that was a good price because it included muffler, custom tubing, labor, tax, and a stainless tip.

    dang it...

now im thinking maybe ill get the regular aluminum one... and then paint it flat black or something...

cuz the aluminum ones arent very shiny. the stainless steel ones are SO MUCH NICER but its like 20 more per muffler.

the aluminum mufflers go for about 60 i think... and the SS goes for close to 80

    ARGH!

I have heard Lon's (Bugzy) Magnaflow setup and it is just like the one in the post. He has 4 inch tips coming out an S4 bumper. So nice. Quiet and deep. If you ever go to a show, I'm sure he'll be there. He also has a Milltek downpipe.

Nevermind! I forgot about all that stuff. The Sportec, S4 rear, and custom exhaust overwhelmed me.

I believe the stock piping is 2.25" and then splits and tapers down to 1.5"? Something like that.. i know that my stock DP is 2.25"..

This thread got me thinking and I decided that I am going to put together a race exhaust for my car. Since the Milltek setup I have is a bit restrictive I feel I can gain some power with something that flows better. The Milltek is a bolt on system so swapping back and forth for track days will be easy.

So, I plan on using the Milltek for everyday use (since it is so quiet) then swapping to a freer flowing (louder) exhaust for track days. My plan is to continue to use the EuroCode Test Pipe and Milltek down pipe, but have a custom 3" exhaust made that can be bolted to the Milltek down pipe. I will use a single 3" pipe all the way back (since this is for track days I don't care about looks and it will help with weight savings). No resonators just a Magnaflow muffler at the back. I was also thinking of having the muffler bolted on as well at the back so if I go drag racing I can unbolt it once at the track and bolt up a small turn down. This will be a true straight pipe race setup.

I used to do that for my Mustang, but the A4 should be even easier.

Are you saying that you want to unbolt and run no muffler at all? If thats the case, wouldn't there be backpressure problems. A little backpressure can be helpful, especially for making torque.

On a turbo car you don't need any back pressure; the turbo provides all you need. What you are talking about is for NA cars. I would only go straight pipe for drag racing and then run the magnaflow muffler on the road course.

This is my first turbo car so I don't know how they react to backpressure. Thanks for the info. I just remember seeing some NA cars gain low end torque from a high flow muffler.

Lon was actually telling me to try out a system with no resonators and just duel Magnaflows. Said it should be pretty good and still not too loud.

I went to check out my exhaust shop and he told me the magnaflow mufflers are very heavy compared to borla is that true? He also told me they did away with magnaflow since there heavy and they dont last to long. The borla mufflers has the same sound and are much lighter. Iam just wandering if this is true, I never heard of this before. Iam leaning towards the magnaflow though.

Its going to be tough to bend 3" pipe under the rear axle in the back thou..

So your planning on going from 2.75" (the miltek dp) to 3"? I can tell you that on my old car, i had a full 3" system (hiflo cat too) and i lost torque down low.. Granted, my Ko4+FMIC (etc.. ) wasnt pushing as much power as yours is now..
