Champion Racing has entered a second Audi R8 for this weekends race at Infineon Raceway. Though this sounds like a great thing for the series and the race, unfortunately its not what everyone might hope.
The car is the one that ran at Le Mans last month and has been put back together and rebuilt since. However, due to the costs of testing privately, Champion has entered the car into this weekends event in order to take advantage of the practice sessions and make sure the car is back up to the standards it needs to be for their backup car. You will see JJ in one of the cars and Marco in the other during practice and they will likely switch back and forth as well, but there will be no second Audi in the race come raceday.
I inquired about the possibility down the road of seeing the car in order to help clinch the manufacturers championship for Audi and at this time there is no plans to do so. Should it get really close Audi may decide to shovel some money and drivers Champions way in order to do such a thing, but at this time there is no plan for such a thing. Right now Audi has its sights set on the DTM and that is where they are spending their pennies.
So for this weekend enjoy seeing two Audis on track again during practice, as that is likely to be the only time we will see it this season. But keep those fingers crossed, and maybe with a win or two by the Dyson team, we can hope to see another on track before the end of the year.
