1. High-schoolish ?? hmmm not all car clubs are like that, take for example:
art in motion (used to be team kosuko), team hokori, team strykr socal (my previous crew), EKT, EP, and other norcal and socal teams, these are the guys that are professional and have one thing in common, loves cars! i love the camaraderie of being in a car club. most of these cars look really nice because they do things right and for sure they are the first thing manufacturers noticed at car shows, so mad sponsorship for them... no need to spend your own money after that
i know these are the ony 5% of the car crews out there and 95% are the soso teams.. let's-put-together-a-carclub-coz-we-all-drive-cars-with-unpainted-body-kits-and-stock-wheels type of teams... i've seen a lot and made hella decals for some of those teams hahaha
2. Car shows like these just judge how much money you throw at a car. They don't judge things that require actual skill. The people who actually modify the cars themselves and the people who are actually skilled at detailing get left behind. The people who have the deepest pockets (or are dumb enough to spend it on ridiculousness) tend to win because of the bling-bling factor. That's true, damn dude you go to HIN a lot hahahaha (no offense to vision ent. lovers
) but if you check out Mainstream Productions events like Import Showoffs they judge differently, you don't usually win there if you have a Supra front end on your Accord
I guess I should put in my 2 cents too eh?
For the most part... Ken really hit it on the head.
I'd just like to add a few things to the mix here.
It's true that quantity counts for when it comes to shows but the show scene is changing very rapidly these days. More emphasis on details and little things are being focused on and even the NCCA has hired more competent judges in the show curcuit. I know for a fact that at HIN LA and San Mateo... they had euro judges to judge the VIP sections who were very knowledgable about the little things.
The show scene used to be all about all show and no go... but many shows these days emphasize engine and performance mods more so than bling mods.
Prime example... HIN LA. We had 2 identical Techart porsche's from the outside ... The main difference between these 2 cars were one was ICE'ed out with just a chip for engine mods... and the other didn't even have much ICE but he had a fully built motor with 700+ HP.
Guess who won best other?? The fully built performance race Porsche beat the bling iced out one. Both of which were in Exklusiv
PS. As a competitor ... 90% of all the work ever done to my car has been performed by me... from downpipes, to brakes, custom fabrication, suspension etc. Just wanted to add that in there. Lots of us do our own work to our cars. If we didn't... we'd be completely broke from all the installation costs.
PPS. EKT was at the Concourse de Elegance Hillsborough this year
