Question Being recruited by a car crew...should i do it?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so i've been approached by a crew....and very respectable one at that....as they won first place VW and first place JDM at sunday's FormulaD/Mazda Extreme show on Sunday at Infineon....

i seriously think my car (audi-wise) is way not worthy, but i guess they see some potential...(i would seriously need a body kit and some major stereo mods)in fact, they are recruiting both my babyhatch and my lil babyd to join their crew....

but anyways.....i was thinking...if i do that, that would mean me.....

    1. having to go to all the HIN shows et al...
    2. not parking with my audizine contingent that makes me sad.
    3. i'd have to chase chase hoochies off my car (well, the cute ones would nice boobage can stay as long as they dont sprawl out on my hood) heh heh

uuum. that's all that's at the top off my head.

    but

they said they would "hook it up" - don't know what that means....but i'd be the only audi in the crew...

    what would you guys do?

thanks for the input, my audizine hornos. i mean homeboys and homegirls!!

Honestly, it has a lot to do with you being a female modder.

If you have the time, money, and energy, then sure why not. We all know you love the respect and attention.

I've you got a lot time to give then you should do. Show then that females can mod cars too.
If it was me i don't think i could do it just because it would probably take my weekends away. Which is the only time i've got to myself these days...IMO

Nope...cuz you said you weren't modding anymore. I don't think you want to spend so much of your time doing the car show scene, do you? Especially when it cuts into your mountain biking time.

it's up to you, that "team" is one of the respectable and winningest team in the scene right now and they are one of the old skools that stayed long in the industry... look at your cars' future, if you are thinking of taking your car(s) to that "showcar" stage then that is the quickest way to get there, and also potential of getting more publicity and lots of exposure (which i know this team already achieved), hence more sponsorships and hook ups! get to meet all the hot import models up front and just get to meet the top dogs of the industry... but if you don't wanna do all that work and travel places to join carshows 6 times or more a year to represent your team, then you think about it (believe me, been there, done that during my JDM days) fun but lots of work and money involved!... coz that's what most car clubs require....

BUT, if you wanna be a drifter and autocrosser, forget about carshows!, then join Team Craftwerx next year!

Being on a team takes alot. time for shows, time for meetings, time aways from other things youd want to do. and you need $$ it isnt cheap to keep your car up to "team specs" and having to enter shows takes a bunch of money then being there wathcing your call all the time and not being able to enjoy the show.
I just recently left my team, which I was considered to be the vice prez of. And i miss my friends from the team but I enjoy having free time to spend w/ my family and being able to do other things and not having to worry about my car and what money i have to save up for shows.
If you do it just be prepared to devote alot of time to it, and money to your car. It can and will be fun but very very tiring and can get old quick if youre not into it.
Do you have a need for speed? Then drive it like you stole it!

Agree with Anth, they just want a "girl racer" kinda thing.

Personally, I don't see the point in spending a ton of money on body kits anyway. Stereo I understand I guess, it doesn't get beat up and it seriously improves the sound. The whole show scene just isn't my thing I guess. Way too much money spent on the cars that could be spent in much better ways.

Of course that is personal opinion though... On top of that, the whole "crew" thing is well... I dunno, seems high school-ish personally. But I respect that they do what they like, and put a considerable amount of money and work into the cars.

I'd rather be racing than showing.

    hmmmmmmmmm

i just realized..i cant exactly take a "show car" to tahoe as i snowboard a lot in the winters..which is one of the reasons i haven't painted my lowers.....

but gosh, all the hook ups and such - my car can be so pretty! (may be i'll even get a YELLOW paint job!)

gosh, i wonder how long i have to think about this...may be i should ask their team leader how much time and money this would take and what the benefits would be.

and Anth - i could care less for attention, you silly boy! girls with potato bodies (i.e. me) would rather have the attention on the car, not the driver!

Yeah, you get enough attention and hookups as it is, no need to be in a car crew for that.

I thought a lot about being in a "crew."

    Here's why I didn't:

    1. High-schoolish. Its an organized clique with a pretense of liking cars.

    2. Car shows like these just judge how much money you throw at a car. They don't judge things that require actual skill. The people who actually modify the cars themselves and the people who are actually skilled at detailing get left behind. The people who have the deepest pockets (or are dumb enough to spend it on ridiculousness) tend to win because of the bling-bling factor.

Notice I don't see any "crews" at the real car shows - Concours d'Elegance events featuring old school cars, Ferraris, Porsches and such.

    3. Time commitment. Too high. Too much expectation to be there when I'd rather just chill.

    4. I'd rather be waxing my car or autox'ing than showing.

So its all up to you Dawn, but those were my reasons.

    1. High-schoolish ?? hmmm not all car clubs are like that, take for example:

art in motion (used to be team kosuko), team hokori, team strykr socal (my previous crew), EKT, EP, and other norcal and socal teams, these are the guys that are professional and have one thing in common, loves cars! i love the camaraderie of being in a car club. most of these cars look really nice because they do things right and for sure they are the first thing manufacturers noticed at car shows, so mad sponsorship for them... no need to spend your own money after that

i know these are the ony 5% of the car crews out there and 95% are the soso teams.. let's-put-together-a-carclub-coz-we-all-drive-cars-with-unpainted-body-kits-and-stock-wheels type of teams... i've seen a lot and made hella decals for some of those teams hahaha

That's true, damn dude you go to HIN a lot hahahaha (no offense to vision ent. lovers ) but if you check out Mainstream Productions events like Import Showoffs they judge differently, you don't usually win there if you have a Supra front end on your Accord

Yeah, I agree. I was overgeneralizing the first point. I think there are some clubs/crews (AZ for one) that are fun to hang out with. But when it becomes a business.. it gets a little annoying. Plus, having sponsorship is nice, but I like the satisfication of working on my own car. I'm not saying that some of those that win don't, but I know a lot of car show winners that don't know how to operate a torque wrench. That's all.

I'm sorry hunneh, but if I were you, I wouldn't. I could understand if you were still in college or much younger when you have all kinds of time on your hands. If its just for hook-ups, then I don't think its worth all the time, money, and effort. If you're really passionate about doing it and being involved, then by all means, go for it, but if I were in the same position, I'd turn it down graciously. I'm too old for that and my free time is too precious to invest in my car(s) that much.

If is not a big company that is going to sponsor your car, then don't do it, is a waste of time, stay with the Audizine crew, and don't forget to come down to waterfest and meet your eastern Audizine members, we look way better.

I guess I should put in my 2 cents too eh?

For the most part... Ken really hit it on the head.

I'd just like to add a few things to the mix here.
It's true that quantity counts for when it comes to shows but the show scene is changing very rapidly these days. More emphasis on details and little things are being focused on and even the NCCA has hired more competent judges in the show curcuit. I know for a fact that at HIN LA and San Mateo... they had euro judges to judge the VIP sections who were very knowledgable about the little things.

The show scene used to be all about all show and no go... but many shows these days emphasize engine and performance mods more so than bling mods.

Prime example... HIN LA. We had 2 identical Techart porsche's from the outside ... The main difference between these 2 cars were one was ICE'ed out with just a chip for engine mods... and the other didn't even have much ICE but he had a fully built motor with 700+ HP.

Guess who won best other?? The fully built performance race Porsche beat the bling iced out one. Both of which were in Exklusiv

PS. As a competitor ... 90% of all the work ever done to my car has been performed by me... from downpipes, to brakes, custom fabrication, suspension etc. Just wanted to add that in there. Lots of us do our own work to our cars. If we didn't... we'd be completely broke from all the installation costs.

PPS. EKT was at the Concourse de Elegance Hillsborough this year

so i'm getting this vibe that i'm being discouraged from this whole car crew/team thing....despite the fact that exposure leads to hmmm more hook ups and sponsorships...yada yada..

but yes - it would take a lot of time, effort and money...

and what would i do at a car show - leave my car parked with the crew/team and run off to hang out with my audizine hornos? heheeheh

    hmmmm.
    difficult indeed!

    Don't do it...

I've been in Varitec and X-Factor. Do you like stress? I don't, that's why I'm done with crews.
    Thank you: MatrixIntegrated

see!! i don't know why all these people discourage you to join, i say do it! at least just to try it... they are giving you parts sponsorship already, you're not even with them... where Audizine can't provide to you even if you are advertising the site, oh sorry i forgot AZ is not a crew... just a forum

I say test the waters Dawn.
Do you have to give the parts back if you leave the crew?
Is there like a contract you have to sign saying how many shows you have to attend in a year?

Takes a lot of time and dedication. If you are willing to put in the effort then its worth it. Most important to me is how well that crew\team get along, drama within the crew\team is not worth the headache.

    HI, my $.02.

I'm in a show team (EKT) and I still track my car and daily drive her, 90 miles round trip to work!

The show schedule is easy to keep, just keep your car clean & be prepared to do a few shows a year. While you're mid-modding, you won't be expected to show, but maybe you help your peeps prepared their cars for the show (remember Lloyd flossing my car? :-) THANKS LLOYD!!! I owe you a Starbucks!!!)

You'll get sponsors, meet more peeps, and of COURSE you get to hang w/ AZ ppl at the events & shows. AZ is an online user community, and we have ppl here from teams that do compete against each other. That's the great thing about AZ, "all are welcome" ;-D. You never give up your AZ affiliation just because you're part of a competing team now....

Since I was asked to join EKT last year, I've done 4 more shows (Euro Showoff, HIN- LA, Audi Club Concours at Nationals, and the one Sunday) and won trophies at each one. Luck? Maybe, BUT I keep the mods tight on the car, keep her clean, and have a nice little presentation/ setup ready for the show. You have to keep a current list of your mods on a nice plaque or picture or engraved plastic display, be ready to talk to the judges when they ask about your mods, and KNOW what is on your car and how it works.

For example, I enter HIN as a "Touring Car". The rules for judging my category specifically state the mods should be to "maximize performance on a track or road course"... so I'm sure to discuss why the setup on my car achieves that purpose.

It's not just "show up, drop off car, wait for trophy".... there's a lot of prep and thought ahead of time. But the ppl in your new club can help (and should help!) steer you towards the right mods that can achieve an overall look or theme to your car.

I think you should do it. More ladies are needed in the motorsports industry, in ALL areas- track, autocross, D1, show teams, HPDE events.... so your participation will encourage others as well. Plus you're easy-going, fun to talk to, and would be a great promoter/ spokesperson for your team! :-D

    quattrogirlS unite!

Someday we'll have a Ladies Only showteam... wouldn't THAT be something?!

    :-0 hahaha
