just want to know what people use, manufacturer and ratings.

when i was in T.O. my dealer was putting in Castrol Syntec 5W40 formulated for Audi/VW, I have seen here in SoCal Mobile 1 0W40 for european cars

what should I be considering here in sunny SoCal?

Amsoil 0W30 but switching to the new Amsoil 5W40 european formula at next change.

I'm kind of surprised at how many guys use Mobil 1 on here. I used to but if you saw how much cleaner Amsoil stays between changes (breaks down less) you would switch in a second.

Amsoil here too. I've never seen a place that sold it direct. You need to either know someone that is a distributor, or just buy it over the internet at www.amsoil.com. Ask Hassmeister who is on this board. He's a distributor and can hook you up I'm sure.

I am on a late model pit crew, and we use synergyn oil, for motor and red line for gear oil. I use Red line 5W30 its specifically formlated for turbo engines, and it works amazing, its a little expensive but RED LINE is the way to go.

I think we have all been mislead into believing the what the oil companies and the uneducated mechanics have been told.

Follow the link that I found and I think you may seen what I mean.

    http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbi...oil_bible.html

From the information provided I think we may need to rethink what grade oils we use for our locations.

    What do you guys think??

    Geez, it says it all:

While we're on synthetic oils, I should mention Amsoil. I originally had them down as an additive. I was wrong. I've got to say I've had no experience of the product myself so I can't vent my spleen about it. However, there is a particularly good page with a ton of info about it here. I recommend you pop over and read this and see what you think.
I've been contacted by Amsoil themselves and asked to point out the following:
Amsoil do NOT produce or market oil additives and do not wish to be associated with oil additives. They are a formulator of synthetic lubricants for automotive and industrial applications and have been in business for 30+ years. They are not a half-hour infomercial or fly-by-night product, nor have they ever been involved in a legal suit regarding their product claims in that 30+ year span. Many Amsoil products are API certified, and ALL of our products meet and in most cases exceed the specifications of ILSAC, AGMA etc..... Their lubricants also exceed manufacturers specifications and Amsoil are on many manufacturers approval lists. They base their claims on ASTM certified tests and are very open to anyone, with nothing to hide.
It turns out that Amsoil actually have the stance that they recommend engine oil additives are NOT to be used with their products. This will become relevant later on this page, and in the additives section. They have a pretty good FAQ on the Amsoil website, which you can find here.

Jose at Eurotech in LA (you guys down there know who Im talkin about) did my oil service right before I left. It is time for another change so I called him today and he said to use 0W-40 Mobil 1. Finding that is not exactly easy, but he IS arguably the best Audi mechanic in the country. So I also called Avalon motorsports today and they said using 5W-30 would be fine. I see many here use it, but wondering if it is really the right oil?

    Sumps:
I would advise you not to overthink the oil too much. both those grades, if you buy a high-quality brand/formulation, will provide more than adequate protection. Remember after all, there are thousands of Audis out there whose owners don't have an idea of what oil is being used, take their car to dealer as usual, and work just fine. I believe most dealers use mineral 5W-30 as their 'house' oil.
Try *both* those grade if you like, and see if you notice if one *might* perform a tad better than the other.

RBT, thanks for the post, but keep in mind also that there are a lot of OTHER audi owners with blown engines, turbos etc. As well, there are many who have cars that run like champs, and Im hoping to be one! Also sort of a newb @ Audi maintainence

All good and well, Sumps. Oils are one of the very few things I immodestly say I know a lot about, and I wouldn't want ya to be sleepless over whether you made the right decision choosing among a good selection of products
Especially if you're talking about a street car, as opposed to a race-tuned engine. But seriously, it's not a bad idea trying more than one of the oil viscosity grades within the acceptable range for your car. You may see small variances in apparent performance, response, sounds, etc. But for the most part your car's internals will be well- protected.

anyone know how often the oil needs to be changed if I use the Amsoil Euro Oil? Also if I use the amsoil oil filter, about how long can I go without changing the oil? Is it possible to use the amsoil oil filter with Mobil 1 synthetic? Only reason I'm asking is because though supposedly you don't have to change the oil that often, if you are using Amsoil, I just want to run clean fresh oil. Thanks for the help.
