hey guys i have a pair of slotted and drilled front brembo brake rotors. and a fellow member thinks they CANT be turned down or resurfaced. is this true. has anyone ever done this or know someone that can. i have a feeling you can get them done but then again it is legitament that they are unable to do it. let me know if anyone has done this. thanks.

sure you can..... the OEM rotors are said to not be turned as the metal used tends to be softer.

I don't see how you can cut a set of slotted/drilled rotors and make them useful again.

The slots are going to be 2-3mm deep on each side of the rotor. The drilled holes will need to be chamfered at the edges to make them work properly without tearing up the pads too much.

the stock thickness of an A4 front rotor is 25mm.

the wear limit on said rotor is 23mm.

how are you supposed to cut this slotted/drilled rotor without compromising the integrity of the rotor?

Are we saying that you would cut .5mm from each side and then re-slot/re-drill the rotors? Won't the slots be too shallow to be effective now?

not only that, for anyone who has ever turned a rotor themseves would know it is difficult to get a consistent surface as the blade can potentially get stuck in the crevices and holes in the rotor... this could cause gouging around the slots and holes which would make for a warped braking surface. there are some that will turn them but most will not, i wouldnt do it personally but that is why i dont have cross drilled or slotted rotors.

Exactly. I just can't see how anyone could get back to a smooth/level surface when trying to cut a slotted/drilled rotor, let alone staying within spec on thickness.

so do you think it will be ok to just replace my pads today without turning them down. i knew ahead of time from a fellow member that this can be done but realy shouldnt be done. but i dont want to have bad brakes after i spend 60 on pads and i dont want to go buy new rotors. do drilled and slotted rotors warp easily or do you think they will be fine and have even wear on the surface area. i havent actually pulled the brakes out yet but i get to do it today after summer school. anyone know where i can get a set of used tt caliper carriers for cheap. if i find those i might just buy the a8 rotors and i already have the pads now

if you brake and the car shakes then you have warped rotors if not then hopefully you will be fine

for sure get yourself some brake quiet as the rotor surface will not be smooth and could cause brake squeal better safe then sorry.
