i am not looking for a compact light weight design notebook.
powerful one for around 1500 dollars.

HP looks pretty good to me. but i heard dont get the HP compaq ones. what's the difference?

and... dell seems to be little bit more money than others.

ibuypower seems good and the price but how reliable are they?

alienware looks nice, but too expensive.

    any suggestions?

yeah dont get HP or compaq... even though they have good specs on paper... they cant "get that power to the ground"... so basically the will work alright when u first get it, but after u put osme programs on it, it will slow down like crazy and hang and whut not....

dells are reliable (from my experience, others will tell u differently) and although they are pricey, they are very powerfull and all around good computers...

dunno about ibuypower notebooks or alienware...

my suggestion wud be to get a new powerbook... spend a few more bills and get a BADASS notebook! (just make sure u dunt leave it in ur car, or it well get ripped off within 4 days.... i kno from experience...)

    good luck

    peace

Alienware stuff is for heavy duty users, like digital content creators (3d modeling and animation).

How compact? 12.1" screen or 15" screen?

Try looking at the Acer Aspire series. They have great specs and look sexy too. A few of my co-workers have them and they love 'em and say they are reliable (I work at an Animation studio so they are pretty picky users).

If you're looking for something smaller Fujitsu specializes in smaller notebooks (they usually deal with Asian markets). They are usually 12.1" to 13.3" screens.

Do you need battery life? Do you want an AMD64 based or Centrino? Or do you want to go desktop P4? Desktop P4 is fast, but batteries will last you in the 30 minute range.

AMD64 will go for about 3 hours on some notebooks. Centrinos will hit about 4 hours.

Ibuypower is reliable, I know people who have bought from them and had no problems. They got one of the battalion models with the Centrino and 9700 video card.

I'm buying the barebones shell of that exact one, taking out the motherboard and putting it into my laptop case (I have the Radeon 9000 GPU). Switch my old motherboard and GPU into the barebones case and buying the CPU, RAM, HD, etc. and selling that to my bud.

You can build laptops now yourself, like I'm basically doing. It's not that much harder really than building a desktop, just a lot more screws. Check out www.1toppc.com

Also look into PowerNotebooks, DiscountLaptops, the eMachines A64 notebooks, and Sager notebooks, all tried a true and cheaper than the boutique dealers like Alienware, Falcon NW, and Voodoo PC.
