I was planning on spraying my tails with tint for the blackout look. Is there a DIY thread on this anywhere?

you might want to go really really course like 40 grit get in deep in the plastic tails.... All you have to do is prepare the tails with window cleaner and let it sit, its depends how you are doing it search the forums for tinting tails there are a couple on here. if you are going to user window tint becareful, i would rec, NVT nightshade IMO

Please please please do NOT use 40 grit sand paper. Your finish will look like crap and be filled with scratches.

If you are spraying the outside of the lens, use wet 800 grit sandpaper (maybe up to 1000). The instructions should tell you for sure what grit to use, but I'm 99.9% sure that 40 grit is way too coarse.

Type "spray on tint" into Google and you'll come up with a few DIY guides.

Yes you can get clear coat in a spray can. And to reiterate what you have already been told, you should wet sand with a minimum of 800 grit. 1,000 would also work. all you are trying to do is break the surface of the plastic to insure adhesion. 40 grit would put valleys in the lens and absolutely ruin it.

Re: What grade Sandpaper for blackout tails?

here is a DIY.. my buddy is sittin right beside me and he works in the Paint industry..

    - Prep with a mild degreaser and make sure you rinse very well.
    - prep sand with wet 800-1000 grit just slightly buffing
    - rinse again
    - let them dry
    - go to a paint shop and ask them to put a few drops of factory black into a high quality clear coat such as PPG
-spray 2 light coats and wet sand with 1000-2000 grit (the higher the better)
    - spray another light coat
    - now its up to you to decide if u wish to go darker if add coats until u get what u want
    - to end it off buff with a mild polish

these things will gleam, it will not look cloudy whatsoever and it will last alot longer than any spray can tint. also it will cost you about the same as a good spray tint and clear, if not less.
