Pinging while going uphill at low RPM.

I have been noticing that I am getting a slight pinging or knocking at low rpm's and while going uphill only. It is easily replicable and all you need to do is go up a hill in third gear at around 25mph. It is a rattling noise that sounds like a ball in a coffee can. It is not the DV, as I replaced that to try and fix the problem. The boost gauge says I am at around negative 7-10inHg, so no boost at all. If I get on the gas a bit more and accelerate with positive pressure then it goes away.

How many others have noticed this??

im really not sure what pinging is...

and i dont know exactly waht it sounds like...

    BUT

i do know that before AND after i was chipped...

occaisionally the engine would sound very rough. like it wasnt oiled or somethign...

i think it also tends to happen more when its hot. or the engine has been running a long time already.

there is a completely different sound though when i first start up the engine. it idles pretty rough and then a few minutes later it goes away.

Hmmm. The obvious explanation would be too much timing advance but that wouldn't explain why it goes away when you get on the gas.

Maybe when the pressure goes positive the timing is retarded and that stops the pinging?

I have never, ever, experienced pinging with Revo.

    Mark,
You've just described the problem I'm having with my Sk04 kit.
    I think it's advanced timing.

You probably are correct. I wanted to see what others were experiencing with their setups and see if they had the same symptoms. it sounds like a Neuspeed K04 software issue.

I emailed Anthony at Greedspeed and he asked about my fuel octane and plugs. I always run 93 octane and just changed my plugs 500 miles ago using NGK BKR7E copper plugs. I will see if I can get the timing of my program backed down a little bit.

hey zemun2, what plugs are you using. specifically, what temperature rating?? 6 or 7's? I am running BKR7E's and I wonder if they are too cold at low rpm's.

Hope you figure that out mark. I'm fairly interested in a K04 and was hopin that the K04 software would be free of glitches...

My SK04 came with IK24's and the car was pinging like crazy, replaced them with BKR7E's and pinging went down a little bit.
IMO 6E's are too hot for the SK04/K04 setup, try them for a week or two and see how you like it.
