maybe but gears are selected ok; it could be a cracked flywheel, or clutch and flywheel stuck together, it hasn't been driven for a few months. but hoping to check all that out as last resort.

Clutch problem, definately. Even if one axle was disconnected or broken the rest of the wheels would try to turn. Even if the rear driveshaft was removed, the front wheels would try to turn.

The problem is that the clutch might actually be stuck in neutral position and that's why shifting feels fine. The question is how it's staying that way.

Can you select a gear without pushing the clutch pedal? That would tell you what state the clutch is in.

Other than that, the only way you could have gear selection and no movement is with a broken input shaft on the tranny. I'd wager that you get some horrible clunking though.

I would think transmission before clutch. If the clutch was grabbing fine before this. Same thing happened to me all of a sudden my transmission just went.

I'll give your idea a try before I eventually take it to the stealership or audi workshop - ( I'm trying to avoid them at all cost!!!!)

    Sounds like a clutch.

I had a spring let go in my pressure plate all of a sudden and the car would not move in any gear (obviously).

If clutch/tranny repair is out of your mechanical abilities, get it towed to your trusty Audi service shop.

If a CV or Axle broke - your car should still move, but with some funny sounds..... clickety click click

It's the clutch. I had the same thing happen in an old eclipse AWD.

i had terrible clunking. u could hear the axle rattling around in the front right of the car. but like i said, the car would not move. and i had no clutch problems. dunno y, when i gave it gas, the clunking would just get louder

One of my drive shafts (front left) fell off while I was driving.

It resulted in not drive to the other wheels (1997 A4TQ), I expected power to still go to the other wheels, but no cigar.

(it was the axle the speed sensor is connected to, so my speed went up :P)

Found out it was a cracked gear box all along and one of the gears has a collapsed rod selector.

Got a second hand gear box and hey presto problem solved!!
    Thanks for all your comments!

    Damn! How did that happen?

Are your motor mounts in good shape? Perhaps the motor is moving around too much and it fatigued the tranny's case and cracked it?

It got hit from behind; but still drove fine at first and no one was any the wiser.
