    Powdercoated rim pics -->

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    finally got my rims back from the powdercoater and mounted some new S03's... plus I made some polished center caps to fit in place of the old sportec ones (ground down some swing wheel centercaps from 2.5" to 2.25" and sanded them w/ progressively finer sandpaper to achieve the polished look)

    mounted them on the car today and realized how much I love the car w/ them on.

    closeup of the centercap

    here's a comparison photo w/ my "winter" rims (if you can really call them that since they have s03's on them now... but I guess I'll eventually get some winter tires)

    Question: how well does powdercoating hold up compared to rims that have been "repainted"? Do they chip, fade, flake etc? Also, how well do they hold up in extreme heat such as if you are tracking your car and your brakes heat up A LOT?

    don't know yet but powdercoating is supposed to produce a much more durable finish. but I don't plan to track w/ these wheels anyway (they are 28lb cinderblocks) -- thats what the A8 wheels are for.

    but basically, I think powdercoat is just another form of paint and will be susceptible to the same elements, but it is supposed to hold up slightly better.

    Powdercoating...if it is done right is far superior to paint. Much stronger will not chip, fade and never needs to be waxed. Just make sure that you don't use anything but soap and water to clean them powdercoating will not hold up to chemicals.

    thanks! technically the old ones aren't "stock" at least for the a4. They are forged 17" A8 wheels. But yeah, its definitely a world of difference

    I bought them on ebay.de for $275 shipped. But I ended up recouping a lot of that by selling the autodimming mirror glass since I couldn't use it on my car.

    if you read my first post, I made them from swing wheel centercaps. basically I filed them down from 2.5" to 2.25" and then hand sanded them and then polished them.

    Powdercoat is way more durable than most other forms of paint. It does not wear, chip, or flake unless you are really trying to get them to (going at it with a hammer or somthing ect.) like other paint either. Powder Coating is applied much thicker than liquid paint to to give it a thicker coat which gives it much durability. The best part is that powdercoat wipes clean with mild soap and water. As for the heat it will hold up well, standard powdercoat will hold up no problem over 500 degrees.

    Here is a quick FAQ page off our website that will show you guys what powdercoating is all about..

    Looks great, clean looking yet unique!

    I may resort to doing your center cap technique for my wheels if the 4B0-601-170-Z17 caps I just got don't work out as well...
