Do you need VAG-COM if you're just replacing a non functioning Steering wheel control unit with a new one?

    Re: B7 Multi-Function Steering Wheel into 2002 Audi 24...

hey guys, just wondering if this same system would work with a 2007 Audi A3 steering wheel that has volume and radio controls??

My audi B6 avant has the 3 spoke steering wheel without any functions on it, would i be able to swap the Audi A3 steering wheel by just having the airbag and steering wheel?? Right now im not worried to get the radio controls to work since i didnt have them on the wheel anyways.

So is it a straight swap?? b6 3 spoke wheel with no controls, to Audi a3 3 spoke wheel with sound controls???

You can use that but you will need a new O ring, a new harness, and the steering wheel/airbag. Then you need a new multi-function module to use the functions.

what if i dont care if the functions work or not, i just want the wheel on and have the airbag work?

Will i still need all those other add ons?

and if its coming from a car that has been written off, will the parts needed be on that particular car??

You need a correct harness, o-ring, and airbag/steering wheel. Module is not needed

You could get from a wreck yes since those aren't ruined, but you can get them from the dealer. The o-ring is called the "s/c ring" technically. And you need a b7 harness.

Would you happen to have the part number for the S/C ring that is required to use the MKII TT airbag?

I don't have it on me bc I have a b7 and didn't have to buy one, plus I get my OEM parts from genuineaudiparts.com and just search through their system (isn't by part number but model/year)

From what I've found, 4E0-953-541-A is a euro-only part, right? Does anyone know if there is any additional/reduced functionality that is supported by this rev vs. the 'B' rev? I can't read german

    &

8E0-953-549-Q has been replaced by 8E0-953-549-R. Again, anyone know of the differences between the two?

for the s/c module, I'm pretty sure it was -A, but I could be wrong. Not sure what the differences in revisions are, but they are minor at best. My parts were taken from a 2007MY A4

    Re: B7 Multi-Function Steering Wheel into 2002 Audi 24...

Write-up worked great! I used the -A S/C ring and the -Q control module with no functionality problems or fault codes. Couple notes from my install:

-A T27 torx isn't needed (someone mentioned this also), I'm assuming he was using it to remove/install the airbag. I used a T30.

-It's listed that you only need the (4F0 971 589 A) airbag wiring harness if your airbag doesn't already have one. My airbag came with a harness...but the connector was ever-so-slightly different. Thus, I was thankful I already bought the other harness...unless you have the exact same part#...buy the harness

-My MFSW only had 3 pins on the MFC harness... My airbag harness had all 6MFC pins filled...this caused some restlessness with me until I said f*ck it and just tried it. Turns out, pins 1-3 were pre-wired just fine (using the diagram from proxus)

-When re-calibrating your steering angle sensor, you can figure out what brakes you have by cross referencing your previous coding (that you wrote down) with the login coding listed on the ross-tech wiki. No guess-work needed...

-I have a telescoping steering wheel... took me over a year to realize this

    - And a final thought I take no responsibility for -

-When I was re-wiring the airbag so both stages fire simultaneously, I found that the idle resistance of both airbag plugs is 0, meaning they're a normally closed circuit. The reason this was interesting, is since there's no idle resistance, there's no way for the car to differentiate between a single-stage bag or a dual stage bag. The only way this could occur is for the car to send a signal to the bag to ignite, and during ignition, a resistance is created mechanically that is fed back to the sensor (just a theory, but unlikely)... This shouldn't be read with a single-stage controller, as it's just an 'all-or-nothing' controller...once it sends the 'ignite' signal...that's it, game over, and it won't know any different. And if there was a way to differentiate between the two stages and between different airbags, that should be determined wayyyy before ignition actually occurs (in the form of an airbag fault code).

I can think of two reasons why this wouldn't work: The controller only has enough amperage to fire one stage of the airbag...like a capacitor discharging...This, I find highly unlikely from a 'fail-safe' perspective, as the controller should want to do everything it can to ignite that airbag when necessary, and I don't see an engineering benefit from limiting amperage.

The other is if there are voltage output differences between the B6 and B7 airbag controllers (unlikely), and/or voltage differences between the different airbags and/or stages (also unlikely). Since it's a normally closed circuit, from an electrical standpoint, you send current, and poof.

Thee problem I see (and I think what most site as being the real issue) is that both stages will ignite simultaneously. They're set to go one after another, as one builds on the other. Think of it like improperly packing a parachute... Basically, the airbag won't open "properly", but per my previous argument...there's no reason it shouldn't 'open'.

Those who reported problems with air-bag fault codes based on humidity...I challenge them to check their wiring and connections of the two airbags...before I blame the hardware.

I'll post pics of my OEM-like airbag harness wiring once I get everything uploaded

4E0-953-541-A was dropped and superceded by 4E0-953-541-B and can be found in the online from USA resellers for just over $300

    Re: B7 Multi-Function Steering Wheel into 2002 Audi 24...

alright guys, I have the wheel swapped and have done the pin swaps. I'm getting a "Control module incorrectly coded" and a miscalibrated steering wheel sensor (since I moved my wheel). On my cluster my brake light flashes and I have an ABS light.

When I try to recode my ABS module via VAG I can't seem to store them. Here are the SW code and workshop codes I wrote down before the swap:

    SW: 0010607
    workshop: 63351

    Any ideas?

you need to recalibrate the steering angle sensor as per the instructions on the ross-tech site, linked in the first post. IIRC, you have to login, calibrate the sensor, then login again (diff code) and recode the control module.

Hi guys, first post so be gentle I've just retrofitted a TTS fbmfsw into my B6 all went well except the multi function buttons / rollers do not work. They light up dimly as soon as the ignition is switched on. Is there any way to check the buttons with a multimeter theres only 3 wires and 1 of them is ground. I tried to check them with measuring blocks in VCDS but they do not function. Here's the autoscan log from VCDS

I've read through lots of steering wheel threads / posts and noticed a few other people had the same problem but never said if or how they fixed the problem. I did not change the steering control module to 8E0953549R as my car came with cruise control factory fitted and was told this module should be ok as long as it took the coding which it has. Even people who changed the module had the same problem. Any advice greatly received.

    Hi,

    Happy new year!

Did you change your control unit or is it still the original 953 549 L ? If it is the one with an L at the end it will not function. An R at the end is what you should get, although it should function with a Q aswell, at least that is what I have.

    Re: B7 Multi-Function Steering Wheel into 2002 Audi 24...

    Hi Guys,

I have a problem with the MFSW buttons.

SMLS is finished in R, but left MFSW button doen't work and the right MFSW button only change the volume (-/+).

Vagcom says that the SMLS recognizes the right and the left buttons (measuring blocks 5 and six, i think it was), but concert I only change the volume.

    Any Ideas???

    THX a lot.

    Re: B7 Multi-Function Steering Wheel into 2002 Audi 24...

    Well

The SMLS recognizes the buttons and the scroll wheel, but only is possible to change the volumen (Up and down). I recoded the radio too.

    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/..._Generation_II

When you press the MODE button, i think you change among Navi, BT, FIS, but if you have only radio i think it does nothing.

The problem is with the left scroll wheel, the radio doesn't change the radio station which is in memory.

    THX
but it is the same, nothing goes better.

not sure if its because of your original settings for spain, but when i did my upgrade, i didnt even have to recode anything to get the multifunctionality to work. left side is for changing of radio stations and scan functions, right scroll is for volume and navi directions.

6 months ago I retroffited an audi S4 B6 with the MFSW of an audi TT and I had NO problem (but this car had a RNS-E).

    I'll try with other radio.

    Re: B7 Multi-Function Steering Wheel into 2002 Audi 24...

folks, just need to double check.

i have all the parts needed for the MFSW install into my 03 B6. (S/C ring, control module pulled from 06 B7)

However, reading once more through this DIY and cross checking with my parts i've noticed that i have some revision differences with my parts.

The parts HX_guy is using are:
    Control Module - 8E0-953-549-R
    S/C Ring - 4E0-953-541-B

However, mine are one revision older:
    Control Module - 8E0-953-549-Q
    S/C Ring - 4E0-953-541-A

Can someone confirm please that these should be OK, or will i have a problem?

    thanks.

    Both are OK

The main different between R and Q is that R supports heated steering wheel and Q doesn't.

The main different between A and B is that B is a spare part, and A was mounted in a car. A version can not be bought in a dealer, they only sell B version.

    Yours, Santos.
