Buying a new car....tricks and impressions!

So as many of you know, i sold my s4. I sold it to look for a car that is more driver friendly when it comes to actualy driving. So today i set out to test drive two cars...The EVO and The STI. Here are my thoughts on each.

    The EVO
We started off with the evo. This car doesn’t have cruise control, or automatic up and down windows....but as soon as you start to drive, that stuff falls into that who gives a shiz category. Anyways, the new leather seats are nice, and the stereo isn’t bad either. The shifter feels pretty good, maybe not e-36 M3 good, but better then most. As soon as the car hits the streets, it really makes its mark. The steering input is fantastic, and the gearing makes the car amazingly fun to drive. When you turn the car, it turns. (see sti comments) Its amazing how predictable this car is. Wherever i put the car, it went there. This is not the first evo i have driven. (I drive our shop cars all the time) However, its still fantastic to see how good the evo is in stock form.

    The STI
For this test drive, i went down to our lovely friends at the livermore group. I saw mike, the dealership owner, when i walked in. He through me the keys to an sti, and told me to have fun. So there i was, Brian Tarte, and STI, and myself. What did i do? I took it to the back roads of course.

When i first got in the car, i was impressed, but not impressed. The dash lay out, and stereo are certainly nice. The shifter feel is OK, but not great...the same goes for the seats. Ok, so now onto the test-drive.

When i first drove it, i tossed it back and forth a few times. The car seemed to be watered down. The steering input was crap, to put it simply. The drivetrain leaves some room for improvement in terms of feel. It feels nice for driving around everyday, but lets see how it does on the first turn. Turn in was crappy to be expected. At this point the car felt like it wanted to oversteer, yet it understeered at the last sec. This caught me off guard a little, but i pressed on anyways. The next turn, the car did the same thing. Even though i was ready for it, the car is very unpredictable, and it always manages to understeer. So after a few more understeering corners, i figured why not play with the active diff a little. When i put the diff on rear bias, the cars feel changed quite a bit. Oversteer could now be achieved, but only under WOT. Its part throttle steering still felt the same as before. The car was a little bit more fun to drive, but it still lacked the exactitude the evo had. The car also felt heavy. I think it was due to the weight transfer. Bottom line: The car doesnt like to turn. When i got back to the dealership, smoke was coming out of every orifice of the car, and the tires were a rolled over on the edges just a touch, so people knew it had been broken in properly.

After that compare-o, i realize that listening to the magazine editors pays off. They hit each car on the head. If you want a fun car, buy the evo. If you want a car that isnt as fun, but still nice to drive everyday, buy the STI.

    The EVO is my choice.

So what are your guys' tricks to buying cars?

my trick is simple, i drive the ones i like, and pick whichever suits my needs best and is fun to drive, i would have bought an S4 if i could afford the insurance then, and with a few tricks up my sleeve i might be making that happen soon. hehe.

See thats funny, I have driven them both a few times, (every time I get the impulse to go buy something). But yet each time, I never buy one of them. And each time I like one more than the other and never end up with either cause I am afraid I will kick myself in the ass 4 months from now....but one day I will settle. Call me a wankster I guess.

Bring a hot girl to distract the sales MEN.... No joke works everytime. Just make sure she knows her role, and knows how to flirt....

EDIT: PS nice choice of car. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

my advise is go to the dealer with a price that you will pay on the spot. then if the dealer doesn't go down to it, just simply walk off and go to another dealer. Also i've heard wait until either the end of the month or end of the quarter because that is usually when the sales quota's are coming to a close so salesman are more eager to deal. Most importantly insist on talking to the sales manager of the dealer because they are the ones who not only have the ability to lower the price, but they also are the ones who care more about moving the cars off the lot.

Not just the Sales Manager, you can try the Fleet Manager as well. They "usually" won't BS you around, and will start off at close to the lowest price-point they'll go, where you'll usually haggle a regular salesman down to.

And don't mention you've already sold your S4, you don't want to seem to desperate to get into a new car.

The "sticking to your guns" part is key too. If they aren't willing to give you the car for the price you want, then just walk out. Be sure they have a way to contact you though, if they change their mind. They just might, when they see you mean business and aren't the usual pushover.

I had a much better experience driving the sti. it felt very fast in a straight line. handling did leave a bit to be desired, but I plan on doing minor suspension work anyways. all in all, I was impressed enough that I ended up ordering one. now I just gotta wait another month or so to get it.

The STI isnt the car they make it out to be. Its suposed to be a performance car...its more like a sports sedan.

go in not caring if you buy the car. that's what I did when I got my truck. because of that I got a really good deal on it. figure if this place won't give you the deal you want, another will and remember that. think of what the most you'll pay is and stick to it.

BRING A CALCULATOR!!! (and some paper + a pen/ pencil) and a friend with a calculator.

when the dude came in offering us something when i got my truck and we broke the calculators out, he left the room trying to get us a decent deal. the "first offer" they give you is ALWAYS A RIPOFF.

remember what you wanted to pay coming in. i garauntee that they'll try to trick and confuse you. make notes if you have to.

don't get what you kinda want, get exactly what you want. look around until you find it if you have to (don't let them know that though) and then buy that car.
Big truck, a station wagon and a Mammoth place. Nothing too fancy.
