I just got back from Stevenson Toyota in Denver. They have a 2000 S4 w/ 60k miles. I went over and took it for a spin. It was really tight as far as trnsmission and handling but the shifting sucked. Definitely good pick up, and nice acceleration throughout the RPM range. Overall I definitely appreciate my car a whole lot. I did manage to get them down from $22,995 to $20,200 and initially I had no intentions of bargaining. I think they even had a couple hundred more in them.

The coolest part was getting two thumbs up from a kid in an old golf while driving home .

    What sucked about the shifting?

I think i know what you mean sumpfast, about the shifting that is. When I test drove in 01 S4, I had a friend that was the dealer in the car, so i drove the shit out of it. It was hard to make quick shifts when going wot. When it hit like 6,500k, i'd try and shift fast into 2nd but i'd always miss the shift, it took a while for it to get in there, but once it did, ZOOOOOOOM, off she went. Thats what I thought about the shifting anyways.

I test drove a 2000 S4 with 49k miles at a dealership and everytime I put it in first it would grind. Dealership said the car was immaculate... until I test drove it, had all sorts of problems.

Yeah, maybe the car had issues but the stick felt such that there were very specific slots for the shifter to hit. More or less the clutch would not grab very easily. There seemed to be alot more resistence while shifting than my A4. Maybe with a UUC ss or something it would be better. The dealer in the car said that often people really struggle to shift when they test drive S4's. That, I don't know.

I would definitely agree with Armed, once the gear caught, it accelerated nicely. However, there is no way I could forsee losing $2500, in exchanging cars, for the car I drove today when compared to what I'm in now.
