So i got a new desktop today

OMG can i just say it's nice to be caught up w/ today's society!! LOL the previous desktop i had was a Pentium 3? Cant remember it was friggin 533 Mhz. This thing would have a hernia if i tried to burn a cd and stream music and surf the internet. WOW. And back then i paid 999 for the computer today i paid 499 w/ 200 rebate for a Pent IV 2.8 Ghz computer w/ 512k 80gig HD cd/RW etc...friggin great. Also picked up a 17" flat panel LCD display for 424 as well...all in black to match the CPU.

Anyway...i have this question. On my previous computer i have two HD's C and D. The C drive contains my applications and the D has my data. I plan on transferring my data over to the new HD, and then moving the apps over to the now empty HD. How do i go about this?

The C drive is a POS 10 gig hd so it would be pointless to bring that thing over. Any suggestions?

unplug the cd/dvd whatever you have in your new computer and plug there your old hd.

Since you are copying your OS, you cannot be running your OS to copy it. I just went though the command prompt and used the "diskcopy" command after booting from a boot disk.

so i can basically go to the dos promt and do a diskcopy of my C drive (applications) onto the D drive? that easy? I was told to get a ghost program and do it that way.

iirc 2 yrs ago when I did the same thing I just used diskcopy or xcopy. In the end, however, I woudl just do a complete clean format and install. Just use your old 10gb as a storage device for all of your data and the new drive as the operating drive (for your programs). That way you can reformat and install WinXp at anytime withouy worrying about your data. With the rate of viruses and corruption in windows these days most people reformat every 3 months anyway. Just a thought.

what i did when i got a new comp... i just took out the drive i wanted the info, and i connected it as a secondary drive, and just copied the important stuff over and that was that.

data i can understand but applications embed things into the system...sooo hence the confusion

anyways, would be best to reinstall fresh application if you still have the CDs, i did that to mine, then copy over the data or hook up your old HD to the new PC.

i know i was tempted to take that card out just to free up a slot...i'm getting the disks and will most likely reinstall and copy my outlook pst file over
