I know the squeeking is related to the control arms going bad. Question is, how bad is the squeeking? Reason I ask is cuz mine started squeeking a bit about 2 weeks ago. A bit as in only when I'm close to a complete stop....Now....it's gotten to a point where it squeeks all the time. When I accellerate lightly, even while the car is moving. I know roads my be uneven, but it seems like the squeeking is continuous. Is this the "normal" squeeking that everyone else experiences? Or does mine sound "abnormal"?

Any squeeking or thunking is not normal and is an indication that your control arms needs to be replaced, simple as that.

That I know, but it doesn't answer my question.

The squeeking is because of the bushing that failed and now you have metal on metal rubbing. People that have had control arms worn out have either a thunking, squeeking or both.

Yes, I know. But the question is does it constantly squeek like the way I explained in my original post.

Think about it. Two weeks ago you got slight squeeking only when you were coming to a stop and this was loading up the front end and putting stress on the control arm.

Now that two weeks have gone by and the bushing is probably worse than what it was before, you now have metal on metal. So even at the slightest movement in the suspension, it will squeek. You can probably go to your car and push down on the front and it will most likely squeek.

Note that I never had control arm failure but this does explain why the squeeking is more apparent now.

Well Audi says that driving around on a bad control arms will eventually fail which will lead to, well, disaster. Of course I never actually heard of a complete failure yet (knock on wood).

There have been complete failures, seen a post about it on AW. Saying that I have no idea how long it will take for this situation to arrive, if ever.

If they are getting bad you might as well bite the bullet and replace them.

Ah. I haven't followed the B5A4 forum on AW in a long long time. Just got tired of the forum.

I haven't either, just the Canadian. But someone here linked to a thread over there with a picture of a failure. The tire was nicely tucked in the wheelwell

    Here's a picture...

Here, the lower control arm on the drivers side snapped off at the bushing as he was coming to a stop.
