    A/C Compressor Tensioner...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It broke off somehow... Anybody know if that tensioner comes off of the compressor? Or will I need to buy a whole new one...?

Does anyone know what the socket size for the screw is down there?

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

IIRC there are two or three hex head bolts about 6mm. The tensioner is NOT part of the compressor.

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

Do you know if I'll have to remove the compressor to get the tensioner off?

Florida heat is a biatch, and it's only April... I was fine in Ohio, but my belt will not stay tight...

The only thing you may have to remove is the front lip spoiler. Would make things easier but not 100% needed I don't think.

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

All you have to do is jack the car up and take it off from underneath. No need to remove anything. I actually just replaced my AC compressor tensioner thinking it was bad only to find out the clutch on the AC compressor was bad so I am in the market right now for a new or slightly used AC compressor. Back to the thread topic, and as I mentioned before you do not need to remove anything and purems has that part in stock and I usually get my parts from them in a day or two. It might be a little longer for you but they have good prices.

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

i had to use a little leverage action to crack them loose, i used a small pipe on the end of the allen just be careful not to strip them, it is a real pain when that happens, trust me i know

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

Use a 6mm allen and a cheater bar - use something like a hollow pipe to give you better leverage and then go for it. thats what you have to do. Mine is getting here on Thursday from ECS so I'll be doing the same job -

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

DONT ROUND OUT THE ALLEN HEAD!!!! Unless you dont want A/C for a few more days :)...

Use a a 6mm allen head socket, hold that socket tight into the head, and get a hammer a hit the ratchet to break the loctite.

I just had to retension my belt as I just replaced it. MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to take the front bumper off and loosen the support upfront. The whole support swings forward about 8-10 inches and gives you more room to work with. but if you like bloody knuckles go for it...

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

The core support slides forward about 3". An allen bit and a 1/4" gearwrench will get you right in there and eliminate the need to constantly reposition the 'L' allen wrench.

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

mmm.... yea 8-10 inches was an exaggeration. I know I was able to put a 2x4 piece of wood inbetween the snub and its mount to get some more room down there, so maybe you gain 3-4 inches. It seemed like 8-10 inches since tehre is SOOO much room to work in down there... NOT

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

As mine had been off before,it was easy to move mine with a long 6mm allen key and a bit of pressure. It is fiddly,no doubt

As stated DO NOT round that baby out or the whole front will need tp come off

    Re: A/C Compressor Tensioner...

so a guy at work finaly got it today those bolts just wouldnt come loose but it only takes 2 bolts to drop the ac compressor and then take off the turbo brace and 3 bolts i think and the whole piece that its attached to can come down then we threw it in a vice and changed it so if ya rounded them over no need to take ur front end off just thought i would share..ps my car is so quite now love it that thing was makin so much noise (who ever said 5 mins should work for audi )

i was able to get an allen key in there but i couldnt turn it. i got a long small socket from my ratchet and put it over the key and was able to turn it. how the hell did you break the tension? i get it tight i hung from it, it wasnt going anywhere.
