    ???'s on GTI's MK3 vs MK4.

Well, in about a year, I'm going to need to go back to the county hospital to finish my training as a surgical resident. Located in a bad neighborhood in Oakland, the county is not the best place for a nice, modified A4 to be rollin' around. The county parking lot is also super tight, so door dings and such are common.

I'm looking for a daily driver (it sounds wierd to get one for an Audi) so I can just get to the hospital reliably and also a car I can make minimal non-flashy mods to, but is reasonably fast.

So far, it seems the best option is either to get an MK4 1.8t GTI or just go with an MK3 Vr6. The latter would be a better option for pricing reasons.

    Any thoughts on reliability, modability?

    Thanks.

I'd get the Vr6, since you already have a 1.8t..

MK3 VR6, add a little variety to the stable.
Would be a fun little car to auto-x as well from time to time.

What they said. VR6 is a great little motor, both the old and the new.

I'm pretty sure that I'd be an even easier target for some random violent crime on that thing. Shoot, my whitecoat won't even fit over it man.

Thanks guys. Yeah, it looks more and more like I'll be heading towards a vr6. My budget is around 5-7.5k... depending on how my A4 modding goes, so It looks like i'll be heading towards a 96-97 vr6 in about a year.

I think I'd limit my mods to suspension and rims... and other autox things :)

Then the VR6 is the clear choice. You'd have to drop some large dough on a SC or Turbo kit to get any serious additional power out of her, so that should resist the urge to spend money on motor mods. Your basic exhaust, intake and chip should do ya...and maybe some cams, and a port n' polish, maybe a...

The GTI VR6 List was a good resource. I haven't looked in on them for a while.
