i just bought a 98 a4 2.8 with triptronic with 64k miles thats completely stock. i'm not sure if its supposed to do this or not but if i have the car in drive and floor it, the rpms will go past 8k before it shifts. is this normal or has it been chipped or is it just broke

thanx! i'm sure i'll have plenty of questions for the audi gods

anyone else have any thoughts why, at wide open throttle, it would wait till over 8k to shift?

Sounds like it may be tip-chipped.?.?.? But wouldn't know for sure. When it's fully floored, it shouldn't shift til near redline, but 8k is way high...

I know that my APR chip does away w/ the rev limiter on my 1.8T, so it may very well be a combbination of a Tip Chip and an ECU chip. Try contacting AWE and ask them. I'm sure they will be able to help you.

Hey kpatrick welcome to AZ. I'm not a expert on these cars but I do know you shouldn't redline that high. I'm suprise the limiter didn't kick in.

You'll learn a lot here. There's alot of really cool people here that just helps out all the time. Ok.... 95% of the time.

Anything going past the red-line is not good, I would get it checked out.

the APR chip brings it up to 7100 rpm. 8000 is still crazy high!

Hmm, really. I am almost positive that I don't have a rev limiter, but who really cares?!?! My car doesn't make any power over 6K anyway, so why would I over-rev it? Right - no reason to at all. BTW, I didn't find any info. on their website about rev limiters.

Either way, he's talking about a possibilty of a GIAC chip and CGIAC tip chip - not an APR chip...

ya know, i have to say, im not really positive about where i heard this. and A4 in SC is right, it doesn't say anything about 7100 or even about raising the rev limiter or governor at all on the website. now that i said this i guess ill have to find out whether im right or not. ill give APR a call.

this dyno does stop right around 7100 actually. maybe a coincidence...maybe not.

It's all good man. No problem. Looking at the dyno chart, you can see there is no more power to be made after 6K, so why worry about it. No biggie to me, but I hardly ever rev mine to 6K either.

If I think about it, I'll give Chris a call.

Welcome to the fam, your car sounds like it has the Giac chip, it also takes the top speed limited off the car.

HAHAHA!! Yeah, it pretty much sounds like it My wife's Passat doesn't do anything like that, and hers is a 2.8 30V tip. Of course, we just spend a little over $2K on it too...and I was planning on an APR exhaust w/ that money...

You shouldn't stay on the same gear once you feel the power go flat. If you go with that, you won't blow your motor and you'll run faster. Your power will probably go flat before you hit redline or right at redline.

These cars doesn't go redline fast with these mild mods. You have plenty of time to watch the tach and switch gears before it reaches redline.
