Is it bad to pull the plactic off and clean your engine with soap and water and then dry everything? My engine needs a serious cleaning?

No no no, no soap please, use an engine degreaser, you can get it at any autoparts store.

    Use Simple Green. Works great.

those engine degreaser kits at the local autoparts store work great! just be sure to cover the major electrical components and dont apply water directly to them.
