Yet - another thread about quad tips

I finally got this done at a shop I used for the first time.

The total cost of the job was 130-140 USD - tips and labor.
I think they look ok - i'll take better pictures when I get home and can use my digital camera instead of the phone camera.

Somehow I have some lingering feeling of dissatisfaction about the engineering part of it.

So let me know what you think - esthetically and let me vent about the part I am most likely going to change.

    1. The pipe the shop used is a few millimeters smaller than the OEM end
    2. The second tip is non-functional - just for aesthetics and that creates a problem b/c I have to keep my functional tip clean all the time

However ever since I got this done I've starting hearing a shrieking sound when I accelerate hard - I am afraid it may be from the smaller pipes

Could a 1/8 or less of an inch for the pipe coming out of the muffle affect the performance of the car?

Thank you in advance for your input .

You should have had them cut the tip, right at the end of the exhaust cabin, create a custom collar, and then weld the tips onto the collar.

I like the quads, but I'm not feelin' the extra visible pipe from the main exhaust.

I dont like the pipe either - but once it's black you can't really see it anymore.

Eh, I'd just get a real exhaust. I always hate seeing the fake tips people put on their merc's that are totally obvious, and this, IMO, is the same thing...

Like I said - the fake part will get fixed - I'll have the piping redone this Friday to make the second tip functional.

I didnt get the exhaust b/c this is more my wife's car than mine. She doesnt dig the sound of the aftermarket exhaust. That's the only thing I could get her to agree to get

Re: Yet - another thread about quad tips

You've got a real exhaust - I wouldn't even consider that criticism. Tips are for looks, no matter what muffler and piping sits in front of them.

I wouldn't think the shriek would result from smaller pipe, especially that behind the muffler, but I do wonder if there's a leak somewhere - maybe in one of the welds?

I'm anxious to see closeups, as my feeble mind isn't comprehending how this was performed. Even if he needed a smaller pipe for the inlet on the tip, why didn't he just manage that with a small adapter?

Anyway, I think you're on the right track and my guess is the end product will look awesome. I was hoping to find rolled tips similar to yours when I was in the market, but once I saw the ones I ended up with I was satisfied.

Re: Yet - another thread about quad tips

thank you for the encouraging words.
    your tips look awesome.
once the car comes back or maybe in the morning I'll take pictures from underneath.

The advantage of the current tips is that they are adjustable. I can move them back and forth.
The disadvantage is that you can see the pipe inside the tips if they are not blacked out.

Like I said - work in progress.

If there's welding being done, I just don't understand why you don't cut the end of the stock exhaust off and weld the tips directly to the can??

Re: Yet - another thread about quad tips

Kinda' thinking the same thing - it'll be nice to see close-up pics. Installing & welding the tips was actually the quickest part of my install. Moving the mufflers in to accommodate the split dual tips went pretty quick too. Making them look as symetrical as possible was the time-killer.

By the way, the lower valance looks great! Are you as baffled by the illusion of color mismatch as I am? I guess that's why Audi didn't paint 'em stock. :)

The placement looks good in the pic, just the color doesn't match. But hey no one would know any better unless they looked under.
