5 Minute DIY CityLight w/Fog Mod (Props to "FatAuto" on AW)...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know this is a repost but I wanted to put my spin on it...
First of all, HUGE props to "FatAuto" for figuring this out. For reference >>> FatAuto's AW Link

Here's how I did it and I've just include lotso pics for people who like pics

1. Identify wires (Position #1 & #2) on the light switch harness

2. Cut Wire #2. Allow for ample wire for step #3 & #4 below.

3. Strip Wire #2.

4. Crimp on Male Wire Tab Connector to #2 Wire.

5. Use these style wire tap for a fool-proof tap. The best wire taps money can buy, IMHO.

6. Crimp on Wire Tap onto Wire #1. Crimp far enough downstream to allow for the ease of Step #7 below.
FYI, I barely left enough room for mine, but for you guys, go further downstream (See Step #7).

7. Connect up Male Wire Tab to Wire Tap & Tape raw end of Wire #2.

8. Done, in 5 minutes time. Fogs w/CityLights Mod...
Whooot !!!!

Awesome, I've always wanted to do this on my B7. Can we put this write-up in the Tech DIY Forum?

So regardless of the position of the dial, the fogs are on? This seems like a great little mod

Not exactly sure on how the Canadian Mode would be affected as in FatAuto's Post, he calls out via the VAGCOM tool to go to RDW mode for the DRL feature.

As for switching and the "Fogs are on regardless of dial position".
NO.
The fogs only go on when you pull the switch either in Headlight mode or CityLight mode.
Really the best way it could be !!!

Conveniently, I have a US car! I was set on getting the factory Sirius, which still isn't available here. (I now know that I could have retro-fitted it, but it actually worked out to cost less, even after duties & such)

It does work on B6's...I've done this mod like a year ago...no problems whatsoever. You can keep your coming home feature. Everything works like normal

You can't pull the switch in auto mode, hence, you currently can't have fogs in auto mode.

I TOO would love to have the fogs come on in auto mode when the headlights do. Is this possible?

Okay, this is a dumb question, but I have to ask it since I'm still new to the S4 world. Aren't we able to pull the switch in either Headlight mode or CityLight mode and enjoy the fogs without cutting wires? I guess I'm a bit confused as to what this mod does. Thanks in advance for not flaming!

You can pull the knob out in citylight mode, but until you do this mod, the fogs won't come on.

I have a random request/question. Does anyone know if, after doing this mod, you remove the fog bulbs you still get the light out message/beep in the DIS? Can someone try it for me?

Yes, the bulb out message still works...
I know this as my Xenon Fogs sometimes (<5% of the time) don't fire the first time until I refire them, then they will come on.
A bulb error occurs then, then they go off once fully ignited.

Oh ok, thanks. I was hoping that this could be a way to bypass the bulb out message. Thinking of doing a little mod and not having the bulb out for the fogs would have been a big help. I might still do this for the time being, really nice mod for a little effort.

I have the same problem, Eddie. But you say 5%, wow mines more like 95%. I have to do the double pull almost every time. Now I installed a set on my brothers car and he has never misfired. He is running a different setup so I guess it depends on who the manufacturer is.

I had the same issue and discovered I had a faulty bulb(s) or an aged bulb.

What you should do is visually check your xenon bulb and see if it is at all cloudy...
If it is, you have premature aging and emiment failure will occur (sounds as if failure has already progressed pretty far).
You need new bulbs to correct your issue. Xenon bulbs should be clear.

I changed my bulbs to new and I no longer have issues.
Hope this helps

My guess is that is where your problem is.
I believe that VAGing is only required if you are Canadian Mode. But not 100% sure.

FYI, I did not have to do any VAGing.

Re: 5 Minute DIY CityLight w/Fog Mod (Props to "FatAuto" on AW)...

VAGing your location setting changes a couple of things:

In the US setting, your corner lights will come on as running lamps in both citylamp and headlight mode. Your fogs will also go OFF when you hit your highbeams.

In the RTW setting, the corners will only be used for turn signals, and the fogs will stay ON with the highbeams.

The wiring change Eddie and FatAuto have detailed will only allow you to turn the fogs on in citylamp mode. Nothing more, at least as far as I can tell. I'm planning to do my '07 S4 this weekend, and I'm already VAG'd to RTW. I will post if I notice anything different.

My guess is that is where your problem is.
I believe that VAGing is only required if you are Canadian Mode. But not 100% sure.

FYI, I did not have to do any VAGing.
Eddie,
I triple checked and even added a direct jumper between pins 1 and 2 by pushing a heavy gage wire into the connector with the pins. They ohm out as a short so I know I have a good connection, and the fogs still work but only as normal. Wire #2 is clipped as in the instructions.
Hmm….Steve

Steve, If I remember correctly I had to VAG to RTW. I don't think it worked on the stock US setting. This was on an '04 S4
