    Re: Brake Light flashing...

ive had it happen. your brake fluid is low. either in the resoivor above the master cylinder or in the abs resoivor located behind the master cylinder. in the abs resoivor, you want the fluid level to be above the bottom of the screen to the point that it is about 1/4" above the bottom of the screen filter thing.

yea its going to be the e-brake light that flashes. did you see that i answered your question? youre low on brake fluid probably in your abs resoivor!!!

FLUID, definatley, if that doesnt fix the problem, I know after I had my car lowered the ass holes forgot to tighten my driver side rear a-arm bolts and my wheel would move front to back, and it caused my brake light to flash during hard turns... but most likely it's your fluid

    Re: Brake Light flashing...

lol, looks like ppl need to be doing better mainainence on thier cars. mine did it after i bled my brakes. the level in the master cyl was full cuz i had been adding as i went but i didnt even know about the abs res. i noticed the flashing light on the test drive around the block and it took only about 5 mins to solve the prob. if the light is flashing you should atleast try to figure out what is wrong right away especially if the light thats flashing says "BRAKE" and beeps. brakes are pretty important...

    Re: Brake Light flashing...

this just happened to me when i got my car back from getting ss lines put on. the reservoir above the MC is full, but where is the abs reservoir that's located behind the master cylinder?

i also read you need to check under the little yellow cap on the brake fluid reservoir, but it's full in my case. do you think the brake light flashing could be caused by an improper bleeding procedure? the brake pedal has farther travel than it used to have.

Can somebody please give a more precise location for the ABS reservoir on an 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro please. What would be the correct procedure for bleeding the entire system through with new fluid. I just changed the rear pads whilst keeping the master reservoir topped up and now have the annoying beeping and flashing BRAKE light on the display. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Brake Light flashing...

Problem solved with ridiculously stupid ease and thank you to those that replied...

I removed the brake reservoir cap and breather plug, removed the brake fluid filter insert (and have permanently now left this out, as only an idiot would remove the cap without cleaning it) and then played with the brake fluid 'float' which is presumably attached to a brake fluid level sensor. The float has a degree of play from side to side aswell as up and down and had stuck to the side of the channel it moves up and down in, therefore misrepresenting the fluid level.

I would suggest this fault is also the cause of people getting the brake warning light come on when cornering with a degree of passion!

My 1999 Audi A6 (quattro) is suffering from a flashing BRAKE light. I checked the main reservoir at the center of the engine bay, closest to the windshield. It was full. Is there another reservoir? Where is it located? Does it get filled with the same fluid?

    Thanks so much!

There is only one reservoir, but on most cars you need to remove the rubber seal and plastic cover along the entire back portion of your engine to be able to access the breather plug on the top front left of the reservoir (it is a yellow, flat plug opened using a flat blade screwdriver). I found that removing both the cap and the breather plug, then checking the correct operation of the 'float' resolved my problem; I hope your situation is similarly very easily resolved.

Wow, thanks for the quick response! I also noticed some new smells around the car, and I hoped it would be resolved if I could find a place to pour some more fluid... Sounds like maybe I'll need to have a professional take a look

Take the cap off the reservoir, and rub your finger around the screen. It sometimes just sits on top of screen, instead of seeping through. Giving the reservoir a full look. When actually its just pooled on the screen. Mine was lighting up and doing this. Just finger the screen.

You have to love when someone actually takes the time to not help on a thread and goes out of their way to say "why didnt you think of this on your own".

Thanks to all that posted with real solutions, I had changed my brake fluid 4 months ago and started to get the same problem, somehow I have lost a little level and needed to top it back off. Now I'm checking all my hoses and connections to make sure there are no leaks but this was a great starting point!!!

Check the level. I cleaned up the reservoir and could see on the side that it looked low. I added the fluid, started it and brake light was gone.

If the fluid level is low in the brake MC reservoir, then the reason for the lost fluid needs to be determined. While simply refilling the reservoir is required, the cause of the low level needs to be evaluated. However, as the brake pads wear, the caliper pistons move outward, and that requires make up fluid from the reservoir. Regardless, brake pad wear should not result in the level of the brake fluid in the reservoir to drop below the minimum level line mark on the reservoir. With the reservoir topped up to the max level line with new brake pads, the level in the reservoir should remain above the minimum level line with the pads worn to the replacement thickness.

i get the red light flashing accompanied by three beeps - its a bit disconcerting but everything seems to be in order. Someone advised that if the battery was not fully charged this would happen - the car was parked up for a week and when i started it this week it was continuously beeping with the big red brake symbol flashing away. Seemed to improve after the car warmed up and a bit of a drive. No error shows up on vcds though. I put it on charge today for a few hours and only got the beeps once, so will charge ot for longer tomorrow and see what happens. otherwise open to suggestions.

Has it been extremely cold there? Mine started doing this after temperatures got below 20(F) degrees. The plastic around my drivers side e-brake cable was cracked and allowed water to get in, and the water froze around the cable leaving it clamped

first, your in the b6 forum.

That aside, stick your finger down in the reservoir and switch around and move the float around. That should help you out.

    Time for a necro bump..

This issue has low plagued my B6..

Drained most of the fluid out of the MC using a vacuum bleeder, played with the float to see if it was stuck, refilled with fluid..

Issue still persists. It's NOT the handbrake switch, I verified that by removing and actuating by hand, that says "handbrake applied" if its not working correctly.

I have brake lights so its not the brake switch, and my MC is full of fresh DOT 4 fluid..

Is the actual sensor on the bottom side actually bad? Can I loop the plug with a wire to make it go away and or to test the sensor?

Make sure the meshing inside the reservoir is not sucked down. If it is it will throw the light even if it is full of fluid. Take a 90 degree pick and pull it up gently.

sorry to highjack but I have a flashing brake light come on however the issue I have been having is related to my clutch pedal. Sometimes I have normal pressure and other times I have none. I have to turn the car off to get the pressure back. Any idea if this would just be related to low reservoir fluid?

    Any input would be appreciated.
