75 degrees here in MD today - not a hint of snow (yet!) this year... What tires are you running in that much snow?

In 10 inches of snow, my S4 did amazingly well for two days on the Dunlop Sport Maxx summer tires before I was able to put on the snow tires. Now with the snows, it's absolutely unstoppable.

    Very impressive.

Im running the conti extreem contacts. Love the tires.. my second set I have had on a car and I love them! Great dry and wet traction and dig pretty good in the snow for being an ultra high performance all season tire!

Ohh and I gota bring my audi back off the ground. The clearance is killing me with snow this deep. I was pushing it with my front grill to get out of the neighborhood this morning!

I am SO glad I left the car stock. Even at the stock height, the ground clearance isn't quite enough to clear those big chunks of packed snow that falls off other cars' wheel wells. *crunch*

Had my first real chance to take my car out today in the snow.....OH MY!!!! I am in love with Quattro!!!!! I simply glided over everything with no problem, never had ESP or traction control engage once. If I continue to live in the Chi-town area I could not imagine NOT driving an Audi, they're simply amazing in this weather!!!!

I flew back to Seattle a couple of days ago from a business trip to pick up my car in 5 inches of snow and black ice from the freezing rain.

We rarely get snow in town here (though COPIOUS amounts in the Cascades!) and this was my first time with the car in "bad" weather.

    IT OWNED!!

I purposely went out of my way on the way home to go up and down James Street downtown!

The whole time I was thinking, THANK GOD I DIDN"T GET THE 335! I would have had to take a taxi home!

Up here in Calgary we have had temps in the minuses, and snow for a couple of weeks...the quattro rules!!!

Even my wife commented saying how she had the best handling car on the road with regards to the snow.

    I'm loving it.

What's so great about quattro in the snow? I have two other AWD vehicles in addition to my RS4, including a BMW 330xi (60/40 split just like the RS4) and they're all practically unstoppable in the snow and ice. Yes, they all have dedicated winter tires and wheels.

Not trying to start a war or be a wise guy here, it's just that I hear this all the time and would like to know what exactly makes quattro superior, or if indeed it really is.

With all this talk of snow and ice, I figured it was time to put on the winter tires while the sun was still shining. Sorry the car is dirty, it rained yesterday and may snow tomorrow so I didn't bother washing it.

And put in the Audi rubber floor mats too:

Dunlop Wintersport M3s 215-50/17 on ASA JA3 wheels.

Now, as for quattro being superior to other awd cars, i'd have to wonder as well. All systems have their plusses and minuses. I have not driven th S4 in the snow yet, but I doubt it is better than an STi with 3 mechanical locking differentials

Ya but in the words of a J.D. Powers exec, that car looks like it was driven through a Pep Boys with a magnet attached.

i dont know that its necesarilly superior...it WAS innovative and has remained the standard to which others are commonly compared. STi may have 3 diffs, but it also puts down torque in a manner contrary to winter driving in general...it is based on a purpose built ralley car...not a winter snow toy. i think it is the audi's balance and control that make it superior...i have had several AWD/4x4 cars and for whatever reason, this audi, even on HP all-season tires, still gets around better than most.

they say winter driving is 95% tire, 5% driver....i think that is a pile of crap. if you can make a y-rated tire work in 5in+ of snow..you have a special car.
