Talking PROJECT - "HEATED SEAT CONVERSION" Thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
** EDITED 12/11/06 - POWER TO SEATS have been installed. VISIT THIS THREAD FOR MORE INFO **

I'm starting this thread for AZ users that want to consider ADDING HEATED SEATS. As a point of reference, I'm starting from worse possible scenario! I'm doing a conversion from NON heat/power/lumbar to FULL heat/power/lumbar.

    -----------------
    Part Numbers
    -----------------

    Front AC/Heat control Unit - 8E0 820 043 AD 5PR

Front Wiring Harness for Heater controls - 8E0 971 566 <- i'm not sure you need this appears to be the harness for the main heat/AC. NOT Seat Heat.

Rear Heat Control Panel (trim piece) -
    8E0 863 351 C 5PR

    Rear Seat Heat control Switch - 8E0 963 563- 5PR

Rear Seat Heat control Harness - 8E0 971 386 <- This MIGHT be the only harness you need.

Connectors # 7 (2-pin) appear to go to the rear heated seats.
Connectors # 4 appear to go to the rear heat switches.
Connectors # 3 (3-pin) appear to go to the driver and passenger seat (though it lists the connector as black, the harness connector from the seat is GREEN)

Connector #9 appears to go to the fuse relay.

NOT SURE what connects the actual AC/Heater control unit to the fuse box. there might be a harness i'm missing still....

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few question for you all that ALREADY have the FULL seating package:

    1. What size is the fuse on your driver's side? - 30amp

    2. What size is the fuse on your passenger side? - 30amp

    3. Where are the rear heated seat fuses located? FUSE #44 is 30amp and possibly the fuse for the entire heated seat element (front & rear)

The other main difference (other than not having the GREEN Harness for Seat Heat) is the RED connector doesn't have a power line running to it.

VISIT THIS THREAD TO SEE HOW I RAN POWER TO THE SEATS

    ----------

    Thanks in advance everyone,

I'm hoping i can make this the official DIY thread for the HEATED SEAT CONVERSION PROCESS.

That's easy enough to do. All you need are some S4 Recaros.

Are you talking about doing rear heat as well? I have full power, heat, lumbar up front and would be happy to help out. I'm interested in doing rear heat.

I was just thinking how does the seat memory module tie into all of this?

^^ Yes, front and rear heat. I will definitely be willing to work with you. So you dont have rear heat? Just front?

As far as the memory module is concerned, i didn't know that Audi had one, exactly which year/make/model did you see it on? PM me with your contact info...

I have an 04.5 3.0 that has front power and front heat. It also has the programmable memory seat option. I don't know if that was available on the 1.8t

I think I mentioned you were going to need a lot of harnesses for this. Probably need to dismantle most of the interior to install it as well.

I might be able to help with some harness part numbers but actually getting it all connected and working is going to be a difficult task.

^^ Yah, i can imagine there will be

    - 2 green harnesses running from both front seats to the fuse box, from there another 1 (or 2?) running to the front AC/HEAT module

    - the other harnesses (Black/Yellow/Red) are already ran, but the RED doesn't have power. will probably just run and tap a separate power line. I just need a confirmation on the fuse size for both driver and passenger side.

    - The REAR heat, one harness on each side running with an in-line fuse (not sure) and then that goes back to the controller unit in the rear center console. I'm assuming there's some kind of power running to that also.

    - As far as seat memory is concerned, i wont worry about that for this project.

SO REALLY, its just the green harnesses and the rear seat heat harnesses i'm concerned about.

The front seats are easy to take out, you just need the right Torx bit. then the rear bench pops right up with a quick pull.

Center console, dash and floor boards will be the harder parts to take apart and access, but i'm preppared for it.

Let me know if you can help with those Harness part numbers...

I also need help tracking down the center console heating controls which I think consists of the LEFT and RIGHT "switch" for the heat, the door lock switch (which i already have) and the actual plate which holds the switches.

    Thanks,
    Brian

I thought I posted the part number for the rear heat controls for you.

Wiring harness for rear heated seats:
    8E0 971 386

I think that harness connects to everything (both rear controls and both rear heaters). I don't have quality wiring diagrams. I'm starting to believe they don't exist.

Can someone take a pic of the REAR HEATED SEAT controls? (mounted below the ashtray)

IF YOU CAN, pop the whole assembly out and give me the PN for the heat switches and the actual switch panel. GRACIAS!

I think the whole assembly (trim and switches) is one part number. I don't have rear heated seats though, just everything else. I posted that number in one of your other threads.

what parts are needed for only the rear seat heaters?

also is it possible to convert to the B7 center console at the same time? that way u can get the rear heated seat switches and cup holders not in the armrest?!

would u have to buy a b7 armrest or could the b6 armrest be reused?

im really interested in doing this!

^^ k, well i didnt have seat power, so there's no listing on my diagram for seat power fuse. just trying to find out what size fuse it would take normally.

Hey i posted a diagram of the rear seat heat harness. this might be connecting to the front seats also! but the connectors are listed as black, not green.

Check fuse #44. Should be 30amp. I'm thinking that should do the trick.

Fuse for the power seats are in the kick panel of each side. So if you remove the trim on the side, you'll see a little fuse. It will be a 30amp fuse. The process is simple to install, Condo and I both just did S4 recaros.

Re: PROJECT - "HEATED SEAT CONVERSION" Thread

Was there ever any success with this? I just picked up the heated backrest portion of a seat in Germany, and the bottom portion shouldn't be hard to get along with the switches from a breaker (salvage yard). I just need to know if anyone ever figured out the wiring.

Re: PROJECT - "HEATED SEAT CONVERSION" Thread

    Hey Tim,

Don't know if anyone ever figured this out, but it shouldn't be much different than the additional wiring I did for the seat memory. Take a look at my DIY. Then you would need to analyze the wiring diagram in the Bentley. My guess would be that the wires would go from the main connector station at the base of the A pillar to the seat heat plug socket in the floor under the seat.

Re: PROJECT - "HEATED SEAT CONVERSION" Thread

Hmmm... I'll look into this at a future date. I have to drive down to Germany in the next few weeks and pick up a few parts (S4 Recaros, a heated back seat-back, and possibly yet another set of rims) and I don't want to wait to replace the carpet, so I'll just look into the conversion at another time. For now I'll slowly amass the parts I need. The rear switches come up on Ebay Germany all the time, but apparently zie Germans didn't get the central lock button for the back seat, so I might be trading that for the heat switches. We'll see...

sorry for the partial hijack, but does anyone the part number for the front heating elements themselves (if it exists)?

i have an 02 1.8t and 2 of the elements don't work on my drivers' side (the lower side bolsters heat up, but the lower middle and seat back don't).

    any help is appreciated.

    Hey Tim,

Sorry I misunderstood. If you're talking about the back seats, Kufatec has a wiring harness available for rear seat heat. Check out their site, they have a lot of ready made harnesses. I thought you were asking about the fronts which is what I was referring to in my seat memory DIY.

Re: PROJECT - "HEATED SEAT CONVERSION" Thread

you know what sucks. the bmw e46 i had had rapid heat seats. my pleather seats take forever then go ballistic burn your arse.

it's almost like the bmw had a multiple current draw system where it could hit maximum temp in about 30-60 seconds (temp dependent) where as on a balls cold day the pleather heater elements take forever? Any ideas how to improve that?

also my left butt has recently gotten hot, i'm guessing a broken element. Is there any tech info on how to fix this without ripping up the seats.

I'd really like to see it work like the bmw where you get full heat in 30 seconds without burning your ass. maybe its the difference between real leather and pleather?

do a4 real leather owners get rapid heat without going too hot? i prefer to wait 30-60 seconds then drive lightly (proper cold engine start); waiting a minute or two for a warm bum when i've not had to one the '02 bmw makes me wonder what is wrong.

and why does the system get so fricken hot it feels like its going to start a fire in my butt. kinda reminds me of (bmw) peak and hold versus (audi) saturated if you get my drift.

I've got black leather, and I tried out the heated seats for the first time today. Rolled it to 6, waited about 1 minute, and then realized that I was an idiot because I live in Florida, and now my ass was sweaty.

I'm pretty sure I will never use that feature again.

Re: PROJECT - "HEATED SEAT CONVERSION" Thread

Did you ever get a response on how to fix the seat heater in your Audi? I'm having the same problem. Driver seat is getting way too hot. Must be a short or broken coil.

LOL .. you said "easy" and "S4 Recarros' in the same sentence ! Finding those things is like finding the proverbial needle in a HUGE haystack !
