Hello all,

I have been dealing with transmission issues in my 2014 RS5 (60k mi) for two and a half months now, and I thought I would post about my issue for others experiencing the same thing, and possibly to get some insight from those more knowledgeable.

Since purchasing the car, there was an occasional scrape noise on some upshifts, just before the shift occurred. Transmission service was booked as a first step in diagnosis. The day before the appointment, while driving conservatively at highway speed, I received a 'Transmission Fault: Continued driving possible" and lost all odd gears. I drove the car home and started researching, after pulling P284F00 and P187F00.

After receiving the other services at the indy shop - Oil Change, Sport diff fluids, walnut blasting, the car was towed to local Audi dealer for diagnosis and transmission service. I only brought it there in hope they would offer goodwill due to strong service history and low mileage. They did not. The transmission service did not remedy the codes, and they then recommended a replacement mechatronics (5K & 5 weeks ). I declined, and towed my car back to Indy shop.

I purchased a mechatronics rebuild kit with solenoids and had the shop apply it, and inspect mech and shift forks for obvious issues. Nothing changed. They had advised full transmission replacement from the get-go, as they haven't had good experience with DL501 repair.

I took the car home, and dropped the mech myself to inspect further and test actuator solenoids. All were within spec and operated correctly when bench tested. I also noted that the identification number on the mechatronics indicated a 2015 build date, which i believe means it was already replaced at some point . I drained and filled gearbox side fluid, which was dark, but contained no metal particles and seemed to be fine. Adaptation failed, throwing a P284B00, meaning fork was now stuck.

At this point I am really lost. I stumbled across a few videos:

Video 2

These seem to describe the input shaft two bearing retention bolt backing itself out. I believe this aligns with my issues, as it started with occasional chirps, which could've been slight misalignment caused by the bolt beginning to back out. What i'm thinking is the bolt continued to back out, eventually causing the shift fork to jam as tolerances with the input shaft two were incorrect. I have the bolt on order from Maktrans, and am looking for shops I trust to do the job. It involves removal of the driveshaft and the transfer case housing.

My questions are:
Has anyone on the forum seen this on other dl501s or have insight into other potential fixes?
Is anyone aware of whether it is possible to remove the transfer case housing without completely dropping the transmission on b8.5 RS5?
