2000 A4 AVANT No Spark Issue

    Hey folks,

Just picked up a '00 Avant with the 1.8t. I've had a few b5.5 Passat's a few years ago, but all were in much better nick than this one.

I paid $500 for the car from a good friend, who let the car sit for about a year and a half. It needs all suspension gone through, essentially everything needs touched. Not worried about it, my 2 year old loves hanging out in the garage, so I got it to keep us busy.

He drove the car for about 3k miles before he parked it, and he said the car lost fuel pressure. He's a good parts changer but not a diag guy, I guess similar to me in this position. Long story short, there is evidence he tried 2-3 different fuel pumps, and gave up. I have the car now, and it is 100% getting fuel to the motor, but I am getting no spark/power to coils. I found that there was a missing relay under the dash, which from what I could find online, was the relay specifically for the Ignition etc. I saw this morning, another gentleman posted the same relay diagram I saw, but with completely different labels as to what they should be.. Regardless, I installed the relay, and I am still getting no power to the coil packs. I want to see if this motor is good now, rather than after I repair everything else it needs. I'm not afraid to build the motor, but I'd rather do that first, or know that I need to first.

2 questions here.. I've done quite a bit of lookin through here and haven't found anything specific to my issue.
#1 What sends coils power on a 2000? I can't seem to find a 2000 model year specific diagram for fuses/relays. How do I find one?
#2 Where would I find a list of all hardware for the engine? I.E; Fuel Rail bolts, coolant neck, coil pack, essentially everything but timing cover is loose or has some aftermarket bolt there. ETKA is more money than I want to pay and the local dealers blow a$$. All of these were missing as I assume the PO was about to start digging into it, then let it sit for nearly 2 years.

    Thanks in advance guys!

For a 2000 1.8T, ATW engine which has a drive-by-wire throttle body and no throttle cable: Power goes to coils via the "Motronic ECM Power Supply Relay" AKA "J271", which is located next to the ECU in the plenum box, all up in your driver side wiper arm area. There is a fuse in between that relay and the coils that you should check first. It is Fuse #29 on the side of the dash when you open the driver's door.

    - The ECU is responsible to close the ECM Power Relay. So if you have the Check Engine Light ON when you turn the key ON (RUN position), then the ECU is booting and should be requesting that Relay to close.
    - After the relay is fuse #29
    - That fuse powers up the Red/Green wire on each coil (pin #1 on each coil).

Hope that helps. If you need more help, post here. We can help you locate parts on the car, provide wiring diagrams, etc.

No spark is the best problem to have. It isn't messy (like gasoline) and is fairly straightforward to diagnose.

Thanks a bunch! I've actually seen a bit of that info after a bit more digging but it wasn't as concise, so thank you. I actually have some time to dig into it this week and weekend so thats my goal. Gotta dust of the good multimeter haha. I might make a build thread, it should be a fun transition.

Thanks again brotha, that was exactly what I needed!
