    Engine stalled and won't start

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    My mom has a 2007 Audi A4 B7 CVT
    287k miles

She was pulling into a gas station and it stalled out. Now you just hear the starter spinning the flywheel when you crank it.

    Here's what I have check.
    Mechanical:
    Boroscope cylinders, all look good.
    Timing belt intact
Meter checked the voltage for cam and crank position sensors. All good.

    Spark:
    Replaced spark plugs
    Verified there was spark

    Fuel:
Checked cam follower for HPFP. Some wear but good.
Added fuel. (Just incase the gauge was wrong)

you have no compression if you just hear the flywheel spinning , snapped chain in the head if the timing belt is okay .

take a peek inside with oil cap off .. see if you can see both cams moving when you turn it with a wrench.

It had pressure to bleed off when I popped the relief valve before I checked the HPFP cam follower.

So when you had the HPFP off , did you verify intake cam was turning ??

Also when you get in the car when its cold do you hear the fuel pump priming ??

Im pretty sure it does it when you open the door , but someone can confirm.

Thanks. The intake cam does not turn all. What should I check to know if it's a candidate for new chain kit and timing belt kit?

ummm if the intake cam is not turning at all .. your chain is snapped and it's too late for any kit . and likely bent valves . time to take your timing cover off and have a look . I got lucky and didn't bend any valves .

next step is remove cam cover, vacuum pump, and timing cover.. and check carnage. you will likely find cam phaser destroyed , tensioner destroyed, chain destroyed at a bare minimum .. hope you are good with the wrenches

scroll back and find the the thread "that's all she wrote" . this is what you are dealing with if I take cam isn't turning

You'd think the valves contacting the pistons would have at least scraped off some carbon.

likely not on the exhaust side as it is still attached to the belt.. but intake side maybe if it has stopped turning due to the chain snapping .

Thanks for all the time to respond to my post. I did find your thread you mentioned. I used a boroscope in my cylinders and they are all coated in black carbon deposits. I rotate the engine to switch the pistons at BDC so I can get a full look and there is absolutely no indication that a valve touched a piston. I think I am going to order the chain and belt kit. Tear it apart and if it still looks good as I go along then proceed to isntall. Otherwise I can return the parts. I wanted to ask something about an alignment tool for the camshaft, if there was one that was specific for the engine or not.
Also, would it be best to align the chain and do that stuff before installing the new timing belt kit?

I would remove the valve cover, turn cams till all valves are closed on one cylinder and do a leak down test. Repeat for each cylinder.

    hold on im confused....

you said the intake cam was not turning at all .... then you said you could turn the crank completely without interference and check with a borescope...

if the intake cam does not turn at all you would not be able to do complete revolutions of the crank without at least one valve jamming the rotation as this is an interference engine.

i think you need to recheck what is happening . if you have a borescope you should be able to see very clearly through the oil fill hole if intake cam is turning.

if you have a compression tester, as mentioned above, just check that , you will know immediately.

On one note, that's one hell of a mileage for a CVT, and I hope you get it fixed.

Either chain is snapped, or exhaust cam snapped(seen it often with loss of oil pressure).
Remove valve cover, and inspect. If cams are good, chain snapped(and bent some intake valves likely).
