    BWT Turbo differences?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all,

I recently picked up a 2008 A4 convertible with a bad engine. Ran without oil, intake cam is now seized in the head.

I picked up a BPY engine recently to swap into it, reading into it the short block is essentially the same, minus pistons, but have also read that it should run fine.

Question I have is really what is the difference between the turbos on the BPY vs the BWT? They look very similar, maybe just the compressor housing is clocked differently?

My goal is to use the turbo off the BPY, since the other one ran without oil, no idea how the bearing in it is, or how long it'll last. If the cartridge are the same, that would be just swell.

Bpy would be a transverse engine, correct? So oil pickup/pan need swapped, crank end depends on manual/auto/CVT(of b7), and brackets/accessories.
As for the turbo, the comp housing is dif, outlets are different. Could swap comp housings.

You are correct, transverse vs longitude. Already planned on swapping pan and pickup, and move all the accessories from one block to the other, just wasn't looking forward to buying a $1700 turbo. Anything else I should know about? Both engines were behind autos non cvt

I'm not sure how the end of the crank is on a transverse auto, was it a DSG? I "think" the transverse use the manual/CVT style crank, but could be wrong. If so, and going into a tip car, ya may want/need to make a modified tip bushing for the crank. There is a thread on here somewhere with the info. Like putting a manual b7 engine into a tip b7.

    I see what you mean, so I started searching, came across this thread;
    https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...manual-engines

Says you can use a manual, CVT, and a tip engine in any car. You just can't put a tip engine in a manual car due to the pilot bearing.

Luckily, the donor car was a DSG, and the convertible is a tip, so I should be golden, knock on wood.

You "should" mill a new tip bushing, to put into the "manual" crank. People have just slapped them together without, but better to have something keeping the TC centered. Have seen people wind up with noise/vibration from not doing this, and some get lucky. I would have one made..

Yep I did a deep dive yesterday, and here's what I found.

All manual/DSG/CVT cranks are the same with a 23mm pilot hole (I think)

All Tiptronic autos have a 21mm pilot hole (again, going off memory)

Getting a tip bushing 058105171A and milling it down is the way to go.

Hope this helps out anyone else in the future 👍

I found a few on here, there was a bunch of back and forth until I came across definitive answers.
